Honestly soto, your heart is in the right place - but you ignore so much information that is given to you.

On your thread we already discussed how male shepard had a face model. Femshep did not. Like Fata said, the one you know and love is simply a preset.

And #5 isn't?

That's correct. #5 steps up from mere 'preset' to 'official default' because it will be used in advertising, just like the default manshep is.

It's not really that difficult a concept to grasp.

For me, honestly, Shepard 1 seemed the best fit for a Space Marine.

I wonder what the poll results would be if they pulled another Facebook marketing stunt and asked what hair color they would like most for Shepard #5.

For the love of God, please no. One poll caused enough arguments.

I agree that the damage has been done. They should have just picked an unknown model and did a high quality render update of Jane Shepard and call it a day.

No! No more polls!

People will never be satisfied.

You give them the one thing they want, they still won't be happy. Plus others will be butthurt in the process because they didn't get what they want and feel bad.

Most people seem to be forgetting that FemShep's a videogame character anyway.

I don't care because I'm going to import my redhead Shep over from ME2.
Also, boo to all you blonde haters.

Is it just me or does the blond one look like a vampire? That's the first thought that came to mind when I saw her. What I do find ironic is that of all the user-made femshep's, the blond version is the least often I've seen by far. Personally I play maleshep so the final choice doesn't really bother me, but I did find the two things I brought up to be amusing.

Yeah, I don't get the blonde femshep hate.

She had the nicest hair of the three long haired sheps (and realistically it was probably going to be one of them, I mean shep 3 and the other sheppard with her hair tied back look good and more battle ready, but if the image was meant to be battle ready shep then she'd be wearing a helmet.) and compared to shep 4 the other favorite she has, I think, the nicer facial features, espeacially the eyes.

So really it's not a shock to me that she won, even though I find I like shep 3's face the most.

Personally I don't particularily like shep 4, she kinda looks like she spends too much time straightening her hair and applying makeup whereas blonde shep looks like she ran a comb through it at the very most. But I think blonde shep would look just as good with black, brunette or red hair. While I'm sure there are some people who chose her partly because of her colouring, I think she still would have won if she has other colouring (well maybe not green hair and purple skin but you know what I mean).

So why all the hate? JUST because she has blonde hair? Alot of people do you know.

I wish they would. I want to know what the fans would choose, and whatever it was, that would be that--I'd be satisfied justice was done. The source of my discontent is feeling that the first poll was slanted, however unintentionally.

I like that they're doing this, very much so, but not that there were four brunettes and only one of blonde and red hair (which was almost brown and looked the opposite of flattering to the color, with that severe up-do), and the brunettes and redhead all had pretty sharp, severe hairstyles. Only #1 and #5 have a wild look to them, and #1 is fitting but most people are not going to choose it. (Hell, a blonde #1, I might've voted for. Nice counterbalance.) #4 was awesome, but her hair was too styled, and she resembled Rihanna in a lot of people's eyes, which was distracting. #6 had a great face but her hair was so girly and styled. Even though I didn't vote for it, #5 was as close as you can get to what I think of when I think of FemShep--all except for the platinum/black eyebrows combo.

It's also a shame that we didn't see all the faces up-close. Some of the Sheps looked much better or worse that way.

I find that ironic as well. I think it's one of the reasons this irritates me. I have trouble accepting that the majority of FemShep fans (male and female) want it this way, and I'm not sure it's the best marketing strategy. Maybe, because of the inherent Samus comparisons, but I have to think that poster would pop more with bright red or vivid strawberry-blonde hair. Particularly the former. I'd prefer black because I love the contrast, but if I put my personal preference aside, bright red is probably the most flattering and eye-catching.

Oh FF............ gaarrgh............ Look it does not take a mathematical genius to work this out..... just over 30,000 people voted for blonde Shepard... there are just over 3,000 comments...... Even if ALL of those comments are saying 'different hair colour', (and they AREN'T, quite a lot of them are defending her against the haters who voted for another one) that would still leave you with the assumption that approximately 27,000 people voted for her as she is and feel no need for anything to be different. And even if those 3,000 people don't like the colour and only 27,000 people voted for her as she is... it still puts her over 14,000 ahead of the nearest who btw doesn't even have 14,000 votes meaning more than twice as many voted for that beautiful blonde Barbie than for the runner up.
This is not rocket science, a few dissenting comments does not a majority make.... Shame though it is if you voted for one of the others....
I didn't whine all over BSN about Hawke who I never use btw... She isn't *my* Hawke. She is a dark haired protagonist and now we have a blonde one... Oh, boo hoo... BioWare give you a flipping character creator, use it and be glad they do.... move on from this, it isn't healthy.. :P
I just hope that BioWare's statistics people have better grasp of this poll than some people evidently do...

Blonde eyebrows probably aren't that common, nor do they look as good as dark eyebrows, honestly.

People have complained for ages about how hard it is to make a good looking blonde Shepard in the ME series.

If anything, I bet a bunch voted for Blondie because they can finally get a good looking one(as long as they felt they couldn't make a good looking one before).

You know, I actually wanted to say something along the lines of "A female saving the galaxy and handling various heavy firearms would probably not look like a supermodel and match the majorities opinion on what 'beauty' is"

Then I remembered that male Shep is actually modeled after a model already, so I am not sure if that argument is really valid or at least doesn't apply to both sides...

In the end people will prefer playing a game in which the character they play looks decent over a a game where your character looks "real" most of the time. At least Mass Effect gives you the opportunity to chose whatever you prefer...

I think the main issue people had here was that the fem shepard everyone accepted and loved got changed for marketing in the first place. Also:

"Having a blonde FemShep is like having the generic MaleShep. They're
typical, 80-90% of players will pick them just to get the game rolling.
Maybe more guys will pick FemShep now that they've voted her in. Because
that's who is choosing this, not the female fans. This is the 80% male
fan base that plays this game choosing the one they think is the most
appealing, not the one that they think reminds them of Shepard, or even a
soldier saving the galaxy. The voting had no story behind it, just
looks, of course BlondeShep won in a pool that saturated with people
that play MaleShep."

Argue on people.

You're missing the point.  GunMoth was arguing that manshep had a face modeled from an actual person's face, while femshep was just assembled using the game's face generator, and that therefore the change to the default femshep is justified.

I'm arguing that tht #5 is still just a face assembled from the generator and still isn't scanned from a real person, so the argument that somehow this is putting femshep on par with manshep is in error.

So they're just putting a face assembled in the generator on ads.  If they're doing that, why not the old default face?

I agree that the winner doesn't exactly look like a war hero who's been through hell. Then again, none of the candidates looked like that. Some scarring and an older face would make it more believable. Lack of those didn't really surprise me, but the lack of a candidate resembling the old default femshep did.. wonder why people couldn't vote for her.

Manshep might be based on a model, but he does look more believable. His picture on ME3s main webpage looks pretty good, though it could use some more scars too.

That said, nobody needs to play as the new default femshep, you can probably still have the old default face from ME1&2, and i'm guessing all those other candidates in the vote will also be selectable faces for ME3. Not to mention character imports (who in here is new to ME games anyway?). So the vote really shouldn't matter to anyone's playthrough. What matters is that the femshep fans finally got some love for their character, good for them and congrats!

That poll would still end up with the blonde winning.  Its not like #5 won by some slight margin, it was a landslide.  Adding more polls for smaller details wouldn't end up changing anything.

I chose the fifth one because she had the strongest and most striking face, the hair colour isn't that important since it's very easily changed in game.

On reflection however I might have chosen the sixth one due to her resemblance to Mia Wallace.

Grrrr.  No one complaining is an idiot who thinks they have to play as #5.  I'd like it if everyone on the other side would stop with that nonsense.  It's a strawman of the worst sort.

Taesuun wrote....

Well, no, and that's what's annoying me.

My Shepart was not the default.  I'm sure some people play the default, but I didn't.  My Shepard was never going to be in advertising, and I've got absolutely no problem with that [1].  Customizable games always feature the default character(s) in advertising.

Lots of people who play manshep don't use the default manshep, their Shepard isn't in the ads either.

BUT.

When Bioware said "we'll put femshep into advertising" the reasonable assumption was that they meant the default femshep.  Not, repeat NOT, some completely new and more conventionally pretty femshep.

That's the totality of my gripe. They were decieving us when they said they'd put femshep into ads.  They aren't.  They're putting some new person into the ads and asking us to believe it was femshep.  If they'd completley changed the default manshep, created a wholly new character who in no way resembled the old default manshep, there would be complaints.

Same here.  I'm not seeing it as love for femshep.  I'm seeing it as love for some new character who is not the femshep we all knew.

Take the old default femshep out of the N7 armor and a lot of players would still recognize her as femshep.  If you'd been shown an ad with no explicit Mass Effect content but the old default femshep you may have said "huh, it's a Mass Effect ad!"

If, prior to knowing about #5, you'd been shown an ad featuring her face, no N7 logo, no Mass Effect content, maybe a caption about "Coming Soon!" or some such, there is absolutely no way you'd have associated that ad with Mass Effect.

That's my complaint.  The generic femshep, not anyone's particular custom femshep, is the old default femshep.  She's the one who should hav been in ads (with suitably updated art).

[1] Though, I'd pay a premium to have the option to send my save file to Bioware and get a realy special tin with my particular Shepard, that'd be awesome and I'd pay quite a bit extra for that, and I'm sure many other players would as well.
