Soto, the point is that your argument is ridiculous. There has NEVER been a face for FemShep until now, unless you're talking about the face you, or I, or anyone else in the world choose for their FemShep.

And as for recognizing it as Mass Effect, all anyone needs to know it's Mass Effect is the N7. That's really all it takes.

Your arguments aren't convincing anyone because they are poor arguments that ignore the facts.

But what's done is done. Hopefully the "new" character creator will have better quality faces to work with and not just be the CC from ME2 with new hairstyles...

Well the bright side of all this is that Bioware appearently figured out how to do long hair in an Unreal Engine game. Up until now all Unreal games had characters who either had very short hair or none at all becaue long hair and soft materials in general are appearently very hard to do in general and take up quite some processing power.

So yeah, if Ashley's and Femshep's new hairstyles are nay indicator, the new chara creator will be great. I wonder how/If they will justify its usage at the beginning of the game for imported characters though. They can't really pull another "you died and got reconstruced" stunt (and they never should have to begin with).

Oh well, let's not sidetrack. This is about the vote on the new femshep and why a new one was even needed.
The two major problems are still that the regular femshep we had thus far wasn't good enough for the public and that the wrong people (facebook and maleshep(loo) players) voted on this.

Looking through my videogame library I see lots of different ethniticies among both protagonists and antagonists, so I find your comment offensive given that it's a purely subjective statement based on a specific race you don't want to

lol come on, lets be realistic here. Are you just trying to argue with that person, not to derail this thing going on a whole other tangent, but the massive slant towards white males or females as protagonist in video games can not be denied.

I'm just getting tired of the same bull being pulled about a certain race being used all the time in games when the majority of games I play either has

a) undefined race (as in you never see it because you never see the protagonist or he/she is covered up in armor or other stuff covering everything).
B) modifiable race, as in you choose yourself how you are going to look.
c) a race that doesn not exist in our modern world. (ie, elves, or robot or whatever)

The attitude against 'specific races' (whatever the side of the fence, cause it happens equally on both sides) is getting tiring sometimes. Hell, I just recently bought the GTA series on a deal and there it even jumps back and forth between each of the titles I got which race the protagonist is.

To cite something as bull is to deem it a false issue and not worthy of consideration.  Citing the majority of games you own rather than the majority of games that have been created to call bull on the issue is folly because you own but a sliver of what's actually out there.  To even think that you can make the statement you did on the issue based on what you own against what's out there is ridiculous.  By that token people are perfectly right in saying blonde Shepard is winning/won because she was voted on by horny males and only then taking into account the number of "hot/hawt" posts made in efforts to undermine the argument you are against.

The GTA series is not a series in which the protagonists are inherently positive because of the benefits they get from killing people.  You aren't a hero in those games.

Having a game that allows you to modify ethnicity doesn't mean much if the box offers an image of the hero as a particular gender or ethnicity.  No matter what, the ME movie will feature a Caucasian male Shepard and the only likely possibility of there being anything different is gender.

In any case I'm pulling for various ethnicities to be featured as positive protagonists in various media because it is still a rare occurrence and will continue to be so by looking at various developers.

GTA series was just one example. And seiously, claiming thta having hundreds of games isn't a sample size worthy of consideration because there have been lots more of games is jsut stupid. Nobody have collected data on every game created, by your take nobody would be able to make any claim whatsoever regarding games, cause nobody spent the time to play each and every one of them.

Your own claim of it being a rare occurence gets blown out by your own claim of needing to collect data on every media produced. You're just pulling stuff out the rear from a purely onesided view without even trying to look at the broader picture.

A quick throwdown:
Roleplaying games: most games lets you define race.
MMO's: most games lets you define race
Fighting games: varied setup in all games including different ethniticies.
Simulators (flight/train/space/whatever): Most games have undefined character
Racing games: Most games have undefined character
Strategy games: Most games have undefined character
Puzzle games: Most games have undefined character
Sports games: Most games have undefined, or selectable race/ethniticy based on players.

And this is just a smattering of different game types of the top of my head. Yet you claim that a specific race/ethniticy is generically always used in >games< as the protagonist.

Maybe in the small window of gametypes you play, but that says more about your limited area of gaming then, than anything else.

I wonder what the poll results would be if they pulled another Facebook marketing stunt and asked what hair color they would like most for Shepard #5.

I'll just C&P my earlier statement regarding the simple truth of that FB vote....

It does not take a mathematical genius to work this out..... just over 30,000 people voted for blonde Shepard... there are just over 3,000 comments...... Even if ALL of those comments are saying 'different hair colour', (and they AREN'T, quite a lot of them are defending her against the haters who voted for another one) that would still leave you with the assumption that approximately 27,000 people voted for her as she is and feel no need for anything to be different. And even if those 3,000 people don't like the colour and only 27,000 people voted for her as she is... it still puts her over 14,000 ahead of the nearest who btw doesn't even have 14,000 votes meaning more than twice as many voted for that beautiful blonde Barbie than for the runner up.
This is not rocket science, a few dissenting comments does not a majority make.... Shame though it is if you voted for one of the others....
I didn't whine all over BSN about Hawke who I never use btw... She isn't *my* Hawke. She is a dark haired protagonist and now we have a blonde one... Oh, boo hoo... BioWare give you a flipping character creator, use it and be glad they do.... move on from this, it isn't healthy.. :P
I just hope that BioWare's statistics people have better grasp of this poll than some people evidently do...

This ^ wasn't aimed at you, it was a general statement, I just fail to get why people aren't seeing the simple equation here.....

I DO wish that Bioware would allow us to alter the Default Sheps though. Seeing Sheploo with long blonde locks would rock SO much butt, and allowing to change default Femshep's haircolour would alleviate some of the issues people have with BlondeShep.

Though in Sheploo's case, I do realize they used an actual face model and altering that model in-game might be difficult.

Mass Effect 1-  an actual choice in romance options for a male character.  Female character gets Kaidan who has the personality of a hot dog or is a lesbian.

Mass Effect 2- flat out more romance options and "flirts" for a male character or your character is a lesbian again.

Renegade dialog and real time events are made for a male character.

Shepard is a story based on a character with military bravado, traditionally a part for a male.

Bioware gives you the option to play as a female and doesn't bind your hands too much, but the series is clearly written with a male character in mind.

The official marketing/default Shepard is just that, not the CANON.
Canon implies that all other works in the series assume certain choices were made and thus any other choices are not canonical.  However, the books and comics carefully step around almost every single choice you make, save Udina being councilor.  Not once do they reference Shepard's gender.  Essentially, there isn't a canon in Mass Effect and the lack of support (in YOUR opinion) for a female PC does not make Sheploo the canonical choice.  You may continue to believe what you believe, which I assume you will, but I have said what I need to say.

Not that I am supporting the guys complaining, but telling people to get a life on a forum based community surrounding a series of videogames isn't exactly what I would call having a life. :D

Your mixing up marketing with story. Renegade dialog and interrupts can be easily (and has been used) for both genders.

Also I believe you keep up with the idea that women cannot be associated with anything related to military or badassery. The simple fact that Bioware has no canon character and tries their damn best to have Novels and comics that doesn't even point to a specific canon means that the series isn't made for a male character.

They are using the male shep as a main marketing device because males are likely the majority who play ME games.

To me, the real issues are (1) that the only variable trait in this fan poll for FemShep was hair color. They all had the same face with slight skin color differences. The same nose, same eyes and the same stare? And (2) we didn't have to vote for a MaleShep. No no, Sheploo needs no validation from anyone but FemShep does. THAT is the real issue here.

There seems to be a bit of a disconnect here, a vast majority of us are NOT upset she's blond, it's everything ELSE wrong with them.

I'll try to explain:

Following Bioware's own lore as it applies to the ME universe.

First, most of the choices were "white" with is pretty much non-existent in the ME lore and blondes are even rarer. The default manshep had a highly detailed model based off a real person, as were a few others in the game, he was not blond or "white" (seemed to have a darker complexion). Why weren't those same traits carried over to the femshep? Modeling the face after a real person's who closely resembles the original femshep or model a new face based on the traits of the manshep since they are supposed to be the same person. That pretty much cuts the first 3 choices.

Second, Grooming standards for military personnel: Hairstyles that do not allow soldiers to wear the headgear properly, or that interfere with the proper wear of the protective mask or other protective equipment, are prohibited. That pretty much cuts out the second 3 choices. Most have a hair style that can or would obscure vision.

Third, none of these choices look like they have seen a battle or even appear anywhere near the age of 31, which is Shepard's age in ME2. They barely look old enough the have the keys to the Mako.

Plus the default femshep was already used on the box art for the first game. top/center

If you look at the original ME teasers manshep looked similar to Mark Vanderloo but was given greater care later when they officially got the rights to use his face. They should do the same for femshep.

I don't care about the hair color when everything else is wrong.

No, it's Femshep.  Note the "N7" on the Onyx armor:

Only Shep can have that logo.

Here's the old Ash, and she still had light-colored armor:

So you're angry that FemShep is white.

Okay.

And by the way, the model default male Shepard is based on is Dutch. Not all white people have blazing alabaster skin tone.

I also like the complaints about the hairstyles, despite most of them being obviously derived from the ones available in-game.

@Didymos

I fall under the category of disliking the hairstyle, and considering that I suspect that blondeshep is going to be the female face of ME3, I think that it is a mistake to portray a female soldier with hair that would obscure her vision.

Granted, I'm not too militant about it, though. It's BioWare's decision to make, right or wrong. I wont be using it in any case.

Yeah, but it's the double-standard of saying "These hairstyles are bad" when they're based on the ones in-game.  The only difference is, they're not UE3 static hair-helmets.  And you know what?  Sometimes, hair gets loose on real female soldiers:
