You can deny it all you want, but white women in the media whether it be film, fashion, or other media representation such as videogames have ALWAYS been favored more so than black, Asian, or Hispanic women. This recent FemShep poll which featured 4 (1,23, and 5) "white" options (White women represented 66% of the poll) while the other races such as black had only 1.

There should have been 2 distinct white femsheps, 2 distinct black femsheps, 2 distinct Asian femsheps, and 2 distinct hispanic femsheps. Obviously it wasn't like that....

Things are progressing for the better but it a very slow rate.

Maybe that's because most games are made in western countries, where mostly white people live.

Edit: also, why is more forced racial diversity in games better, would it not feel well ...forced?

This whole anti-white topic reminds me of a girl I metI commented on her lovely accent and she said she was African a white Nigerian African born and raised not south African she later confessed she got so much hate at home and here when she mentioned she was African she's confused why people hate her because she doesn't fit the known average of what is from that corner of the land. People need to knock it off who cares what skin color you are and with shep you can change it if you're not happy.

Now THERE is a BlondeShep I'd vote for!

::looks around::  What?!  She looks a lot like Blondie Shepard, to be honest.  The main arguments against Blondie are that she looks "too young" and "too done-up".  I am honestly not seeing a whole lot of difference between the two.  Starbuck seemed to be in her late 20s or early 30s herself, and she doesn't look particularly older or more battle-hardened than the blonde Shepard option.

I'm sure someone will try to rebutt my argument by finding a grittier picture of Starbuck, but in a posed shot like this, she seems to match Blondie in terms of age and the amount of make-up she's wearing.  Now I definitely have no concerns about how Blondie will hold up in the trailer and in-game.

I'm no artist, but Blondie even seems to share facial features with Starbuck.  The jaw and nose seem similar, though I would argue that Blondie has a more squared jaw, thus giving her a "tougher" look.

Seriously, what the hell, BSN?

It's funny how so many people complain over a Shepard that can BE CHANGED IN THR CUSTOM CHARACTER CREATOR.

They're jelly. They wanted something that looked like their shep on the collectors tin and in the femshep ad... because those are the only things this voting thing matters for.

Exactly why I posted that particular image of Ms. Thrace.  Change her eyes to blue, and she'd be a real-live #5.

Only if all white blonde people look the same to you.  Her nose, jaw, and cheeks are obviously different.  Her eyebrow placement and lips are similar, though.

And Katee Sackhoff looks her age.

... which will be 32 in 2012.  Bioware, if ever there was a sign from god for a femshep face model, this'd be it.  Well, and your ripping off of BSG will be 'justified'.

One of the things that I like about that image of Katee Sackhoff is how her eyebrows match with her hair color. It makes it all look more natural. Blonde Shep's jet-black eyebrows are one of the main things that bother me about her appearance; the other being her young, untouched face.

While Starbuck and Shepard are both soldiers, Kara Thrace is more of a fighter pilot with "occasional" ground combat. Shepard is all hardcore ground combat and should look more the battle hardened soldier (despite her somewhat deus ex machina moment in ME2 with the Lazarus Project).

in my opinion all the sheps should be an option in the default section when you create a shepard cause lets face it every one has their own taste in what they want their shepard to look like. In my opinion i didn't find anything wrong with either of the female shepard models since they followed about the same look but tweeked a bit. I liked #3 because she reminded me more of one of my main female shepards and i'm a blonde so its all just personal preference. But i hope we just get an option to choice cause if they only present us with one good female model in the game? some people are going to get angry..... and you know what i mean >_>

Honestly, I could care less which Shepard won. I have a blond Shepard, a red-head, black-haired, brunette. I've got one with a shaved head, a bun, ponytail, sideswept bangs. My only concern about this whole default thing is, "Will those hairstyles be in my game!?" Because, I'd rather stab myself in the eye than play with a default character when I have the choice to customize my own.

And going off with what carilynn46 said, have all those Shep's faces as the the defaults for the facial structure section. Bam and done. I could get myself into a tissy about female rights and equality in video games, I had half a mind to enter the game design field and push to have stronger female roles. However, it's a losing battle right now, you guys can be pissed all you want about a 'white, blond barbie' stereotype in your game, but at least your stereotype is represented.

Occasionally, as a hispanic, I'd like my stereotype to be represented every now and again. Over-sexualized is fine by me, better than hearing about how I'm 'TAKIN EBURYBUDDY'S JERBS HURR'!

Again, hairstyles plz, I'll be happy! <3

Hate to say it again, but...

The concept art we voted on is still a fairly poor rendition of the in-game model. As such, we won't know what her facial textures, skin shadows, cheek gaunt, or even nose shape will look like

I didn't say they were twins, but they have some facial similarities.  It's not exact: Sackhoff's nose and mouth look wider, while Blondie's jaw is more squared.  I really don't see the age thing, though.  Starbuck doesn't look any older than Blondie Shepard to me, but I guess people will always see what they want to see.

I didn't hate the looks of the character, (Here's the selection, for anyone who hasn't already seen it.) and I thought it was pretty cool that Bioware let the fans help pick the design, but I can't help feeling just a tad disappointed in us, the community.  Really guys?*  They offered us one Combat Barbie amid 6 women (all of whom seemed to look a lot younger than shep's 29-31 yrs depending on how you view the timeline, but hey, that's Hollywood baby) and we went with the Barbie?

Granted, the tousled hairdo was cool and seemed to fit the Shep persona, and most of us femShepers will probably continue using our custom designs anyway, but it's still a small blow to see a gaming company struggling to make strides in acceptance and inclusiveness feature a typical and cliched version of feminine strength and heroism.  Thanks for trying Bioware, but apparantly, we're not ready for that kind of responsibility yet.  Maybe you should've started us off with a goldfish, saw how we did with that, and went from there.
Then again... maybe I'm just bitter that my choice was shot down...

*guys is being used here to encompass all genders, fyi

edit:  I think the PC Gamer article sucks
but
I do agree with this one
just hoping to give a little insight as to why I feel the way I do.

There are so many reason why I voted for this "Default" FemShep -- From an aesthetic point of veiw. She is far from a typical looking blonde. She does not look like a Californian type of blonde.(Not that there is anything wrong with them --As Jerry Seinfield might put it :P ) She does not have a tan out of a bottle looking skin either.

1. I find the contrast of her fair skintone with her dark lush eyelashes and eye-liner to be quite striking.

2. Her thick blonde hair is of the same variety as Brad Pitt.

I think the PRIMARY reason why I have voted for her and defended her in other threads. Is not b/c I have been told and (supposedly conditioned) by the mainstream media that "this is what a woman should look like."

NO... For me, in a real sense -- Voting for FemShep 5 was my way of giving the "Middle Finger" to that nonesense said about humans with blonde hair and blue eyes in the Mass Effect Novels. <_<

Apparently, we are suppose to believe that even though people with blonde hair and blue eyes have walked this Earth for thousands of years.By BioWare's reckoning, they should be a rarity in only a little over 175 years time from now.BioWare Please...

Seeing as how FemShep and ManShep are defying extinction in Mass Effect 3.It occured to me, that having an endangered species like a natural blonde in the Mass Effect Universe being on the forefront of the War against the Reapers.Doing all within their power to defeat the reapers.Could have a bit more signifigance. If it was a blonde. For she embodies a kind of irony and  "Poetic Justice" if you will... :D

Wasn't Shepard rebuilt less than what? A year ago? I doubt Miranda would take the time to purposely throw in wrinkles for the hell of it. Sheploo is had creases and lines in his face because he had and established look before ME2, blondie didn't.

Hopefully you will be able to make the others, or at least get something close to them. Maybe the others could be free DLC's of fem Sheps.

Hell, yeah. It's probably in part Katee Sackhoff's excellence in the role, but a FemShep based on her would kick the ass of every one of the poster girls. I'd like to see a real person represent FemShep, as happened for ManShep as well.

I agree very much. If the final version had the right color eyebrows and a few wrinkles/battle scars, however light, it would do a lot for making her look like an actual adult soldier. I hope they're keeping in mind that the final version needs to not cheapen Commander Shepard as a character. That may be strong wording, but it's important to me and I think it's important to most Shepard fans.

To be honest... I don't want my stereotype represented; I don't consider that a plus. I'd be happier with a hispanic or African-American or Native American or Italian or anything other than the same old pale blond with blue eyes. But if #5 is it, then I'm going to make it known that I want them to treat her right in the trailer; make her look strong and natural. I don't think that's too much to ask.
