This system still needs a lot of work as it's not yet complete, but if it can be completed and not become a forgotten memory then this will truly revolutionize how video games look.

One of the main problems with this though is how static the world they made is, and animations don't work too well with it. But if they could figure out a way to get animations to work, this would truly be impressive.

Re Euclideon, no chance of a game on current gen systems, but maybe several years from now. Production issues will be challenging.

Doesn't seem pratical. Or that it even will be useable. Power production is a growing problem. And a machine be it PC or console that would make use of it would need a far better proscessor, and a powerful power plant barring any technological advances.

yup I figured it wouldn't be ready for years, but nevertheless it is interesting to see how graphics may improve later on.

Wow those Australians are pretty bloody smart. I mean first there's Team Bondi with their face motion capture technology used in LA Noire and now there's these guys. Games are really going to be making a huge jump in realism really quickly.

The comments say it's a scam. The only way it would be revolutionary is if it could be affordable.

Epic! Maybe the PS5 could handle these kind of graphics.

@SOLID: I highly doubt it's a scam. I don't take youtube comments seriously, if that's where those comments were (after I watched the video I closed it)

@chunkyman: hopefully, if this is done before the PS4, the PS4 could handle it. Or at least partially use it if that's possible.

I disagree. I think it its practical.

I have no way to back up my disagreement though Image IPB

It looks like it could be practical. Physics engines would probably need a fair bit of programming to boot, though.

I don't know if this guy is right or wrong, but the whole thing sounds like a perpetual motion device.

Meh. Not actually that impressive. Yep, objects look nice when you zoom in really close, as well as at a distance. Big deal. Whilst 'cool', I generally don't spend most of my time in games (particularly FPS games) zoomed into the ground or a rock at 20x with a sniper rifle.

Honestly, I think that the rate of graphical progression has peaked and is now slowing down dramatically. It seems that going forward, game developers will not be focusing on 'pure graphics' so much, as other things like making the characters look real (via motion capture, etc.), or getting the effects looking good.

Well clearly you are just not playing FPS games right. The whole point of them is looking at stuff with a scope!

Psh, you DO know you're supposed to just run with your scope facing the ground or facing the sky above you? I mean, come on, that's basic. You're supposed to run around like an idiot in FPS games. Image IPB

I have to disagree. Games are getting better. We have TW2 and Skyrim, and I'm willing to bet we'll eventually get some games that even outclass them.

Notch on unlimited detail.

"It's a very pretty and very impressive piece of technology," Persson writes, "but they're carefully avoiding to mention any of the drawbacks, and they're pretending like what they're doing is something new and impressive. In reality, it's been done several times before."

So true.

Hehe, running around like an idiot can be fun...but my focus isn't on how detailed the rocks are when I do so.

Oh no, you misunderstand.  I said the rate of graphical progression is dramatically slowing down.  We've seen some incredible jumps from the N64/PS to Xbox/PS2, and less impressive jumps from Xbox/PS2 to 360/PS3.  I think the jump from 360/PS3 to Nexbox/PS4 will be even more marginal - though still better.

TW2 and Skyrim are pretty, and there will be games that look better than them in the future, but more slowly, and not of the same magnitude as some of the graphical leaps and bounds we've seen in the past.

I agree. I don't see graphics as a huge importance as far as enjoyment goes. If devs focus more on gameplay mechanics and plot, I see that as a better investment of time and money. If they have sufficient time and money for both though, I figure why not? There are a lot of very strange people who care only about graphics in a game, and if the game has better graphics it'll make more sales.

Gimme boss graphics! you can have those original doom graphics if you like, or old school wolfenstein for all you who say graphics don't count.

I think that good graphics help with the realism, rather than looking at some pac man arcade stuff.

This is probably the worst forum to say that in because you have a few old school gamers in this one. I wouldn't mind Doom graphics if the storyline, gameplay, voice acting, and dialogue is equal to something like a mixture of all the Fallouts (1, 2, and Vegas), Planescape, and VtM: B combined. Developers need to focus on how to make games better not on this shallow graphics war.

Well I can imagine how this could make any environment look pretty awesome, I realized a few years ago that the graphics advancements in the 3D department are not that necessary for me. I'm fine with polygons even if a close-up of an object reveal edges as shown in the video. Sure I like certain advancements like "More Polys" so it is possible to make more lush environments, but frankly since DirectX9 era, I'm quite ok with 3D Engine graphics from that time still even today.

While the "Crysis" DirectX 10 graphics where pretty cool at the time, I didn't see that fitting for too many games aside FPS. But the 3D capability of en engine is not all that counts in video game graphics.
