I know, no vs threads but I kept asking myself this today. Merill is a really badass Enthropic/Blood Mage. Morrigan is a badass Shape Shifter/Enthropic mage. Also she's Flemeth's daughter. Morrigan vs Merill. We're going by lore here. This isn't a popularity contest. Otherwise I'd pick Morrigan everytime. Please give me reasons why one or the other. Go!

Morrigan because she has Flemeth's grimoire or at the very least, knowledge from Flemeth and she is cunning, intelligence can go a long way to making up for a power gap.

In regards to how they approach their own branch of magic, I'm going to say that Morrigan is by far the more knowledgable and experienced when it comes to how she utilises it. She comes across as far more of a perfectionist than Merrill, though as she was taught by Flemeth, this is to be expected. She also grew up in the Wilds where she experimented and honed her talents as a shapeshifter, while her combat skills were from the Templars who ventured there to capture her mother.

Merrill on the other hand is a little more inexperienced in using her own magic, having studied in solitary and with very few chances to gain first hand experience on how to properly hone her talents. She mentions that she lacks combat experience upon first meeting Hawke, having only done some, on her own, and doesn't show that she is very confident in her abilities, thinking she isn't very good.

So, while Merrill is definitely by far the more powerful mage, Morrigan is probably the better Mage, as she has more experience, more focus, and almost over-confidence in her own abilities.

Maybe if Merrill could get ahold of some Ancient Elven knowledge that isnt just simple blood magic it'd put her on par. But Lore wise Morrigan as she has access to ancient and nearly forgotten magics as well as being the Daughter of a possible god of some sort.

Wouldn't any DA:O mage automatically be better because they can learn Arcane Warrior? You can't really beat that... plus, DA2 mages have to worry about being staggered all the time... except Hawke and Bethany if they learn Force Mage, I guess... still... I'd say Morrigan because I always teach her AW and give her Cailan's Armor.

Wait, you mentioned "lore"... does Morrigan have some lore-specific powers that we're supposed to take into account?  Because I always ignore Shapeshifting completely... if so, disregard what I said.  Otherwise, the comment stands.

You can't really compare DA:O mages with DA2 mages. Mages were nerfed severely between the two games, and possibly with good reason. Mana Clash one-shots FTW.

Yeah, we're not talking game mechanics here. Obviously AW is a destroyer of worlds and AW Morrigan would slap Merrill around.

We're talking lore. The innocent, naive, and powerful blood mage against the cynical, cunning, and powerful shape shifter.

I'm inclined to agree with the trend. Morrigan would win through wits and drive. She walked through the Eluvian where Merrill couldn't fix hers. Maybe the demons Merill consorted with were treacherous. Then again Morrigan is smart enough not to bargain with demons.

If I had to bring "power level" into play I'd say Merrill wins simply because she's Dalish and elves make the more powerful mages as a rule. We don't know for a fact that Flemeth is Morrigan's biological mother so for now I say Merrill has stronger magic.

Edit: And I pitted these two against eachother because they're both "witch" type hedge mages.

You should not forget that Merill is not only blood mage but also a keeper. And, on top of it all, her spec description implies that she has an unusual ability to mix these two kinds of magic. That is sure something.

You missed that Morrigan Eluvian mirror was complete and merril was using blood-glue to fix her's.

You are comparing wits, Merril made a trade with a demon for a reason, morrigan used a warden for her reason, Merill knew the price was high, Morrigan have no clue of "price" she doens't understand feeling, attachements or emotion thats irrelevant to her, she needs soemthing she takes, doesn't matter who get hurts, what matter is who can get it, in Morrigan book, strong win, weak lose, big fish eat small fish, ect. Morrigan can fool people, but Merril will win them by a long way.

In a battle with spells I suppose morrigan could win if she jump as an spider or bear on Merril.. But Merril could use thorns to keep morrigan away and when morrigan get close to the thorns, the thorns heals merril.
Both character can use horror, nightmare and the like, while Morrigan can't pass by the thorns without healing merril, merril can still come out of the nightmare-sleep spells. Mana clash has no effect on merril she uses blood to cast spells, not mana.
mana clash on morrigan will only work if she is not a blood-mage or when she is shifted in another form.
It could be a very interesting battle of skills and I think merril might even win.
