According to things said by Wynne if you're playing as a mage and Varric's mention of the Blight in DA2, this game takes place over a full year. How in the world does that work? Ferelden is small enough that you can get from Orzammar to the Circle in a couple weeks, according to the dwarven girl who wants to go to the Circle, so it doesn't seem feasible that the Warden and company spent most of this year in commute. Are we just supposed to assume that getting each individual group to acknowledge their deal with the Wardens takes months at a time? It seems like it's really pushing it. At most, DA:O seems like it would take place over a couple of months, but a year? Really?
A nagging question I have (spoilers)

Well, you are spending quite a bit of time traveling back and forth. I think the trip from Redcliffe to Denerim is several weeks (I guess it's weeks from Orzammar to the Circle because of the mountains), and you're traveling from Denerim to the opposite side of Ferelden quite often. Not to mention that I'm not sure if it's been said how far you're traveling in the Deep Roads. I've heard some guesses that you may be in Orlais during some of it. I think that a year is conceivable.

It depends on how much you travel.
I worked on a rough timeline and it turned out to take 8-9 months from the beginning (Circle Tower) to the Landsmeet, staying focused on the main mission but assuming I've wasted a lot of time getting lost in the Deep Roads and the Brecillian Forest (we do not know the exact location of the Dalish Camp).
After the Landsmeet we travel to Redcliff, then back to Denerim, and finally fight there. It should take no more than ten months on the whole.

10 months fits. Actually, there are a few things that are contradictory regarding the timeline, but the game never struck me as taking over a year. The only things that support the "over a year" timeline are Wynne's comment to a mage, and also events in the DNM and DCM/F when you return to Orzammar, especially if you return early, though since we don't know much about dwarves, this can be explained actually.
But there are other dialogs that suggest that only a few months have past. Some of Alistair's romance dialog, one of Zevran's friendship dialogs, the events of the city elf Origin and its aftermath, and especially some comments made in both Howe's Denerim estate and in Fort Drakon by the guards make reference to only a few months passing or how short a time Howe has been in power.
