Starting with the idea that Isabela and Merrill had extremely tiny roles in DA:O but became full-fledged companions in DA2, I started wondering about DA2 characters that might make for interesting companions for DA3. I tried to keep my speculation to characters that cannot be killed (to the best of my knowledge), but obviously that's never stopped Bioware before (see: Leliana, Zombie Pope Assassin :?) so feel free to go wild :o

My picks:
  • Cullen. Had a small role in DA:O and a larger one in DA2 but is obviously popular with some fans (and the ladies, it would seem) and his conviction in his beliefs, along with the events he has lived through, would make him a very interesting companion. He is also despised by certain fans, it seems, and controversy is always good (see: Anders/Janders).
  • Maraas (thanks Ulicus). I don't believe his name was ever given, but he's the Tal'Vashoth who has abandoned both the Qun and his role as Tal'Vashoth and just wants to be a mercenary (except when you have work to offer him). An ex-Qunari sellsword on a journey of self-discovery could be very awesome.
Well, I actually had to go do work and now my shift is over so that's all I have for now. I'd love to see what other people come up with and my apologies if this thread has already happened.

I think both Cullen and Maraas (that's the name he chose) would make good companions... and in Cullen's case, I think the chances are high he'll be one in the future.

Cassandra, probably. I'd like to see Finn and Arianne make a comeback, too. Ideally as a Khalid and Jaheria duo. :P

My bet's on Feynriel IF you decided to let him go to tevinter. I would definitely like to see Maraas.

Cullen makes a lot of sense for much of the reasons stated by the OP. Though, for some reason I assumed he would take over as Knight Commander in Kirkwall once Meredith meets her fate, and I am not sure how available he would be with those duties. He has a loyal fan following though, which helps his case, I think.

Nathaniel Howe may be another. His quest in DA2 hinted at a lot of things going on with the Wardens that he couldn't fully confide to Hawke, but could possibly be "answered in the fullness of time." And he hinted at ...interesting... allies for the Wardens, allies which he would not name. If DA3 is going to forge a connection between DA:O and DA2, between the Hero of Ferelden/Warden Commander and the Champion of Kirkwall, I would expect Nathaniel and the Wardens to be largely involved. Oh, and Nate has a pretty loyal (and broody!) following as well.

I'm also really digging the idea of Maraas and the journey of self-discovery. I liked having Sten as a companion in DA:O. I know many players did not take the opportunity to get to know him, but I found Sten's conversations and descriptions of the Qunari fascinating. Having a Qunari companion, er, I mean a Tal'Vashoth, with a different view of the Qun and its believers would make for interesting storytelling.

I think much of it will depend on where DA3 will take place. *pause* On second thought, perhaps it won't - circumstances can be created to make just about any character be where they need to be for the story. ;)

Here's four characters of each class that I think are likely canidates for DA3.  At minimum we'll see 6 companions(2 per class) and probably a maximum of 8 or 9.  I'm betting BioWare goes the same direction of ME3 for DA3, reducing party/squad size to have more indepth companion interactions and relationships

 Fighter companions:
  • Oghren(back by popular demand)
  • Sten
  • Cassandra(imo more likely to be fighter than rogue)
  • New character yet to be announced

Rogues:

  • Leliana
  • Varric
  • Isabella or a new character
  • New character yet to be announced
Mages:
  • Merrill
  • Sketch
  • New character yet to be announced
  • New character yet to be announced
Because of Roleplaying decisions/consequences and the options to kill off party members, I doubt we'll see many other prior companions return in a role other than as temporary companions.

I'd like to see Maraas as a companion. Although I'd probably prefer a female Tal'Vashoth over him, given the choice. Anything to see female Kossith in the game!

I would lay money that Charade Amell will return in some capacity, and it could be as a companion.

I agree, Cullen and Maraas would make awesome companions--their roles have been interesting but small enough to leave them mostly blank slates.  If it wasn't actually possible to kill Shale (I do not recall), I'd like to see her again as a dwarf, it'd make a nice flip counterpoint to her appearance in Origins.  If it WAS possible to kill her I'd rather she did not reappear.  I'm not really interested in Cassandra but I suppose her becoming a companion or at least major part of the next game is unavoidable.  More Varric would, of course, be welcome, although it'd be fine if he wasn't a companion character.  Izzy might be a worthwhile second-go-around companion.  Dagna would be an interesting companion, perhaps (but possibly too similar to Sigurd).

Can't really think of any others.  There weren't a lot of interesting secondary characters in either game that didn't potentially wind up dead/possessed/whatever.

If we get Seamus, Anora, and Feynriel I'm going to drive to Edmonton and personally smack David Gaider upside the head.  Just so you know.

I would not mind having companions that you could or couldn't get depending on what you did in previous games, but considering the amount of work this would entail to make sure that people weren't screwed (and the writers knowing that all their work might be completely glossed over by many people), I doubt this is going to happen.

That being said, I don't want any more could-be-dead persons to come back.  NONE.  The backlash annoyed ME and I had nothing to do with making the game.

I say this even though my most beloved character, Sten, probably cannot come back as a result of this.

The Connor suggestion in post #2 was good I thought, he`ll probably be about 20 at the time the circles falls won`t he? Allthough it`s less likely we`ll see since you have the option to kill him in DA:O.

Oghren is one of my favorites, and I would like to see Varric as well.

Shale as a female warrior could be interesting. She had the option to go with Wynne to Tevinter to reclaim her mortality after all.

Me too!

I think Cullen will probably make a return. I have mixed feelings about him as a character so far, but know that by the end of a third game I'd probably really like him. And I'd really like to see Feynriel again, poor kid. From what little we saw of him, I really liked him.

But I'd give them all up if only to have Nathaniel Howe back. I keep hoping against hope that there's some really important story reason to bring Nathaniel back as a permanent companion. ^_^

But I suppose we'll see.

The problem with Cullen is that he was such an idiot in DA2. Oh well...

Just because characters had the option of dying in the previous game, doesn't mean they won't reappear as companions in the next installment (*cough*Anders!*cough*).

Ohoo, I actually wouldn't mind that. Not at all. She'd be the perfect link back to Hawke.

I need to find the youtube link but there was actually a quest that was cut that involved Connor and Teagan. Somebody found the voice files and posted it and Connor sounded about 19 or 20 in them.

So sad that the quest was cut. :(

I'd like to see a NON Templar Cullen in DA:3. He gets so fed up...he leaves the templars.

Have to agree about Nathaniel too. :wizard:

Despite the "cuteness" he shows, he isn't fitted to be a party member, so I can't see him having a important role in DA3.

I can't imagine Cullen leaving the templars, though I agree entirely; if you're locked in a magical prison for hours/days and repeatedly tortured, and you STILL don't leave the templars, you're probably in it for life.

Now, I can imagine him leaving the Chantry to hunt mages, sure.

I admit, though, I'd like Cullen a lot more if he wasn't a templar. :?

I know, I know. I'm evil.

First of all, Shale! Be she a golem or a dwarf, I'd love to have her back as a teammate.

Don't know about minor DA2 characters, none seemed particularly like companion-material to me...Charade, maybe. She seemed resourceful. Maybe Feynriel too, if enough time passes for him to complete his training.

I'd also like a sentient darkspawn teammate very much. I think they'd have a very interesting perspective to offer :) Would prefer the Architect, but he's killable so a Disciple might make more sense.
