Maybe 3 from DA:O, 1 or 2 from Awakening, and the rest I don't care about.

What about Stroud? He's a Grey Warden, Orleasian, Knows a hell of a lot about what's going on with the Darkspawn, Has a passing connection to Anders and Hawke, and does not need a resurrection.

I think he is quite unpopular.
Cullen is a lot more likely and he would become the frist templar companion in the series.
No Alistair doesn´t count.

None, especially anyone that was a big player from any of the previous games. I like a lot of the characters so far but to just bring them back because I like them is.. hollow.

If it takes place in Orlais or something, the case can be made for cameos by Leliana and Loghain but... they're busy doing their own thing can't just drop what they're doing to go adventuring with some randomer.

Gotta go with Cullen. He's very popular, and he doesn't need ressurection. Plus, he seems to have plenty of character conflicts that would be interesting to explore. As long as they don't make him a vampire, he should be good.

Edit: Also, I'm hoping for a female qunari as a acompanion, LI or no. Just based on the sketch they showed us before DA2 was released.

I could easily see Maraas and Cullen being party members, and probably Cassandra (Cullen and Cassandra in particular if it focuses on the mage/templar thing).

If there's a focus on the Grey Warden thing, I can see Stroud joining the party, or at least having an important role (I don't see him as just being a plot tool for Carver/Bethany to join the Wardens). Possibly even Nathaniel too, who is obviously still a Warden, and seems to be trusted to do his own missions.

As for characters I'd like to see return: Shale (especially if Tevinter is involved), Arianne or Finn (who both could both be developed more - Finn as a Circle mage, Arianne as a Dalish link), Varania (if Tevinter is involved), and Bethany/Carver (who can be linked to either mage/templar conflict or GW).

 Alright, let's see

Warriors

• Stroud, the Grey Warden. He's got a lot of connection to whatever's going on there, is known to be headed towards Orlais, has a connection to the Hawke Family (however minor) and isn't dead. He could be the Tank. 
• Maraas, the Tal' Vashoth. He won't be an LI, but he will have a hilarious personal quest involving a female kossith kicking his ass. You can "pull a gheyna" on her, or fix the two up. Could Also work as a rogue.

Rogues

• Varric, making his triumphant return, alongside his beloved crossbow, is now assisting the Seekers. He'll be an LI this time...or else. 
• Cassandra, a Seeker. What? It's pretty much guranteed that she'll play a major role. Possibly an LI, although this is based on the fact that she's a Morrigan/Leliana Composite. Could easily work as a warrior.

Mages 

• A circle mage that isn't old or insane or a maleficar. Possibly Finn, possibly a new character. Maybe a reluctant mage-side collaborator? But definitely someone who's not broody, dark, ignorant, or a jackass, or all of the above. Maybe an Elf.
• A hedge mage/ arcane warrior. Someone completely fresh to the game.

Others: I'd like to see some more mutually exclusive, Ashley/Kaidan, Bethany/Carver, Samara/Morinth Characters. Especially the later. What if there was a showdown between a tame-ish Tevinter Magister and a nice, Thrask-Good Templar woman (Hot, Obviously, and LI?) Or, what if it was Morrigan vs. Cullen? Food for thought.

Or, what if you can choose what side you start on? What if you got Cullen for siding with the templars and Finn or Anders or someone for the mages?

reasoning she has some thing of a unique backround (treasure hunter)

she would also be a superb way to link hawke and his story into the next game without using him as a character and without simply retelling the story as family she'd probably have a unique view of things but at the same time wasnt realy involved and so still retains an uncomplicated character that wouldnt be to dominated by import choices

aditionaly id love to see sigrun return one of my favourate characters so far in the franchise

Well, it's hard to know who might be joining the player until we know who the player character is going to be or what his/her mission is, BUT if I were putting money on it I'd go with Cassandra, Rhys, and possibly Varric. I have no doubt we'll be seeing more familiar faces but I doubt most of them will be party members: Morrigan, for example, I'm 100% positive we'll be seeing her but I'm equally sure she won't be in our party.

But I would only prefer 1 previous character as a companion, and I would go for Cassandra in this case. 2nd choice would be Cullen.

I suspect Cassandra is probably a S&S warrior. I'm basing this on her heavy armor and the Seeker's Bulwark item, but you never know. Loghain was totally a rogue in the novels.

My guess is Leliana or Cassandra will be a companion... probably Cassandra since they're are making the animated movie about her and her sexiness. (you know you want to tap it)
