i've seen people on this forum occasionally calling for neutral (that is, a kill both sides ending) how would such an ending work?

EDIT: title changed from neutral ending to kill both sides ending.

What makes a man neutral? A lust for gold? Power? Or was just born with a heart full of neutrality?

Kirkwall: -in flames-
Hawke: meh
Sebastian: you have to kill anders!
Hawke: meh
Bethany: Help, I'm being torn apart by demons!
Hawke: I'm going to go get a drink.
-back to Cass and Varric-
Cassandra: what the ****? do you seriously expect me to believe that the champion did nothing.
Varric: you can ask her yourself, she's right outside the door.
Hawke: sooo, are we going to go fly kites ooooor...
Cassandra: Thedas is falling apart, and you want to fly kites?
Hawke:... kites are fun

Meredith: You are the Champion of Kirkwall. Do your duty, or fall with these mages. It is your choice.

Hawke: I have no strong feelings one way or the other. I'm not getting involved.

Meredith: You're already involved!

Hawke: I beg to differ. [Cloaks and runs out of the Gallows]

I'd rather a neutral option that involved not fighting at all, just skipping the whole last quest and leaving the city.

I don't see why not. Both leaders could still die, the rebellion still happens, what's the down side? That the player's 'losing content'? No more so than if you skip any number side-quests -gameplay wise- which the game still lets you do, and the story outcome could be pretty easily summed up by Varric. Besides, if the player chooses not to get involved they have no right to complain that they weren't involved.

I'll never get this. People want a game where they don't do anything. There's plenty of real life conflicts you're not doing anything about. Go turn on the news, and bask in your neutrality. Fiction is about people who do something.

And yeah yeah, I know there's the "I don't want to side with either" reasoning and that's all fine and good. I understand that you wouldn't feel justified either way. But they did cover that base. Meredith rules that if you're not with her, you're against her (also, if you're with here you're against her). It's not that you simply can't not want to get involved, it's that Meredith vetos it. If you don't want to side with the templars, then by proxy you pretty much have to side with the mages just for survival's sake. The largest army in the Free Marches has been ordered to kill you on sight so it'd be a good idea to ally with the other group they're trying to kill for sketchy reasons. You may not like that, but it does make sense. A lot more than other parts of DA2.

a question for neutral ending supporters, where would you get the forces to wipe out the Templars and Mages?

Lol how about a "I can kick both your behinds with my arm tied behind my back ~ I'm sick of your childish squabbling so I'm taking over" option

and then Hawke got his ass kicked for trying to take them both on...

EDIT: in essence, Hawke needs a plan rather than simply saying "i'll take you all on".

also, wouldn't killing all the Templars ****** off the divine enough that she calls an exalted march on Kirkwall?

Well from what Leliana said, especially with the warning for Elthina to get out of there and go to Orlais, I'm guessing it was already on the cards...

true but annihilating the Templar population would guarantee she calls it on Kirkwall.

Totally! My sarcastic Hawke would do that too. He's like the kind of guy who says: "Why bother? Let's have some fun!" lol

Well considering my neutral ending involes Hawke telling them both to f*ck off and leave I don't see why wiping them out matters. Just gonna kill the ones stupid enough to try to get in Hawke's way. They can kill each other on their own.

I think a "neutral" option does not need to be a passive one. As the title suggests, a good third option is defying both of them. You would still go through the same final levels like you do now, but rather then having one side or the other support you at certain points, you would have to wade through both sides trying to kill you. It would put an interesting spin on the end of the game. With the Champion as a neutral force that has proven themselves against both mages and templars, it makes the Chantry's search for Hawke all the more significant.

Very simple

Meredith: blah blah I'm crazy, you have to choose sides.
Hawke & Sebastian: You're a loon, lets just kill Anders.
*Murder Knife*
Hawke: See justice served, now make me Viscount.
Meredith: But I'm crazy!!!
Hawke: Yes we've known that for years now. 3 of them where I did nothing but sit on my hands.
Orsino: So you'll side with us?
Hawke: Hell no, every time I try to save one of you mages you always turn against me.
Orsino & Meredith: We'll kill you if you don't choose us!
Hawke: Aveline, gather the guard and get people to safety. Everyone else come with me, we're going to the Gallows to kill anything that looks at us funny.

If Bethany was made a GW - On the way to the Gallows:
GW Bethany: Hey bro/sis, heard you were trying to save the world from itself. That's my job.
Hawke: Come along then I just stabbed my only terrorist healer.
GW Bethany: I'm not a terrorist!
Hawke: No but you're a healer. Close enough.

At the Gallows:
Orsino: I'm turning to blood magic!
Hawke: See! I told you!
Meredith: I'm crazy!
Hawke: We know!!!
*Hawke & Co kill all the stupid people... thats a lot of people*
Hawke: I can haz Viscount now? Or am I still rising to power? When do I actually get power? I was told there would be power here in Kirkwall.
Varric: Yeah that pamphlet was one of my better lies.
Hawke: Screw this I'm going back to Ferelden.

Cassandra: So thats how the Champion came to be Viscount?
Varric: Yep. By killing off Meredith and Orsino Hawke was able to restore order to the city. Apperently the best way to avoid trouble is to stop putting stupid people in power.

The entire 3rd Act was one big face palm for me. There DEFINITELY should have been some sort of "you're both crazy" option where you don't take sides but still kill both leaders. Which happens no matter what anyway. I suspect they thought everyone would take it so took it out. Because the forced to choose sides bit is SO ARTIFICIAL.

The other huge WTF moment for me was why in hell Meredith or Orsino or Aveline didn't kill/arrest Anders immediately after he blew up the chantry. Made ZERO sense to just let him walk away or let Hawke take him. ZERO SENSE.

ugh I hated the 3rd act.

How is killing everyone neutral? Being hostile to both sides isn't the same.

Well the witcher had a "neutral" option where you moved through the city trying to do your goals, but ultimately killed both sides who got in your way. Not sure how DA2 could have done it.

Protecting the people? Templars aren't attacking "the people", so you will just be fighting abominations.
Running for the hills? Rather lame ending.

Killing whoever's in the way on your way out of the city? Or fighting back to the estate and laughing from the window?
