Sword and Board. My Arcane Warrior ended up becoming a indestructible bipedal auto-attack machine.

Arcane warrior really need a weapon?

You can solo the game naked on Nightmare.

I don't prefer to play naked as Aesira here, but instead opted for Sword and Dagger.

Weapons are not necessary for a Mage to win Nightmare, but it's an aesthetic choice. I prefer Spellweaver + Eamon's Shield or Legion of the Dead shield

There's a unique sword for AW giving huge magic boost, use this one. Also use Eemon's Shield or something else improving Stamina by +25. +25 Stamina means +25 Mana for AW and this is 5 points of Willpower.

I use Starfang (1h longsword made by Warden's Keep smith made of star-iron) plus Redcliffe Elite Shield. I use Blood Dragon Plate with Bregens Honor as helmet. Still, I need sometimes healing. Even more so after I put the dex-patch (fixes dex with ranged weapons) in my override folder.

P.S.: I played "normal" difficulty until about level 15 before entering the dead trenches. Then I switched to "hard" out of curiosity and kept it, since it makes some fights quite more challenging without becoming too frustrating. Some fights, especially with a boss, I need to do more than once. Occasionally I am the last man standing after the fight, but I manage...

So arcane-warriors are overpowered? That's funny, reminds me of the Kensai/mage class of BG2.

Blood Dragon Armor, Starfang and....a Shield, not sure which. Also think the AW is over powered? Try adding Spiritual healer and have the cleansing aura active, keeps everyone alive!

I started using a maul (because it was the only available weapon when I got the specialization) and then a 2h sword. However, it seemed so slow to me that I switched to sword and board, figuring that since he now hits faster, the damage output would not be much different and protection would be much better (I didn't do the numbers though). I'm still fairly low level, so I have no fancy swords, but now I have a sword and shield that both give +1% to critical chance, which works nicely in conjunction with Cone of Cold.

I also still use the staff a lot, because you don't have to sheath it to cast spells.

Stop BSing. You can't even solo some fights fully geared. You need to use caster mode in many fights. AW is helpess against CC spam (+ spell nukes). Do you even play on hard/NM? Or have you just heard forum BS and spread it around?

Lets not get angry, some people may just own at the game but i'm kinda glad i'm not that good, that'd be boring.

Since AW doesn't get the special attacks of warrior/rogue classes, damage tends to be pretty flat.  Thus, weapon speed is more important.  That's why with my AW, I'm dual wielding Starfang and a dagger with plans to acquire Spellweaver next, rather than going with a slower 2H weapon.

+dex equipment also helps a great deal, so you land more hits - if you can only swing x times per round, you want to be sure more of those swings land a hit.

I'm pumping a few points into dex to dual wield decent daggers. I like my kensai/mage quite a bit in BG2 so I'm reimagining him on this playthrough...I just happen to be using platemail now too.

DW will be my choice also, hoping to benefit from my own Flaming weapons plus Morrigan's Frost weapons and soon to come Telekinetic weapons. Two DW:ers and Alistair with all those buffs should be a viable choice.

Anybody knows if animate dead monsters get to benefit from the extra damage and armor penetration also?

The stronger your spell stat is the stronger they are. That said raise an archer whenever you can, that extra scatter shot with spell might is nice.

Hum, Virulent Walking Bomb/Walking Bomb + Curse of Mortality + Crushing Prison + Pots with Force Shield on yourself , possible to solo yes, but slow.

game seems soloable as a mage, though in the fade sequence in the tower I got grabbed by an ogre and that was game over :<

I prefer SpellWeaver and a dagger slotted with more elemental damage to augment meager damage output. By the time you get to the upper ranks of AW, a shield seems pointless, at least without any associated shield talents.

You'll need to have Wynne in your party too if you want to benefit from all 3 enhancements simultaneously - any one mage can only run one of the toggles at once.

well, since two handers are kinda lousy due to the way stat bonuses scale in this game (i.e. not normalized appropriately to attack speed, favors fast weapons) i'd say you're pretty much obligated to go Sword+Shield or Sword+Dagger.

considering your lack of shield utility talents (which Warriors get but a mage based Arcane Warrior can't) i'd say Dual Wield is your best choice just because it maxes damage output. Best main hand weapons are probably Starfang, Keening Blade, or Spellweaver. Best off-hand Dagger is definitely Rose's Thorn.
