I'm coming out in defense of Treehouse again. I don't get why so many people are getting their butts hurt about this.
Lets look at some numbers shall we? From everything I can find, Mass Effect 2, in it's first week of release sold 2 million copies. The lowest whole life estimate I can find is 2.47 million copies... I think we can all agree that that's probably under the actual number of sales. If not, it's still almost 2 and a half million copies. These previous run standard of 500 meant that .0202% of fans got a lithograph. With the new increase to 800, and assuming a sell out, now only .0324% of fans are getting a lithograph. In the age of "limited edition" strategy guides with print runs in the mid to high 5 figures, can you really still complain about this?
I think we should all be grateful they haven't increased the print run to 10,000 and advertised the lithos on the Cerberus network. They could also go the route of charging for digital art that is essentially framed screenshots. Our nice artbooks could be digital art books. I know the small print runs are attractive for some people, but I have a feeling if Treehouse jacked the price up to $200 a litho and decreased the run to 100, these same people would be complaining. Bioware doesn't answer to us, they answer to our wallets. I hear a lot of people saying they will sit this out, but that typically turns into those people caving eventually. If you really want to get your point out, vote with your wallet. That is what's really going to get Bioware/Treehouse to listen.
In the mean time, I don't see any problem with an 800 run lithograph. THBS could easily incentivize early purchases too by actually following through on the order number - litho number correlation that we've been promised in the past. I'm still going to get these, I just would be more likely to get one if I felt assured of getting a low number.
Valve has sold over 4 million copies of portal and over 3 million of portal 2 those number not being completely accurate since there have been steam sales since and they still only have 100-200 copies of each signed litho. Not exactly fair to compare anything to valve but just because. I also would like to think about the artists hand, how annoying is it to sign the same thing 800 times. Or even try Ubisoft and assassin's creed. They easily have sold millions of copies of each game and they only have 60 of some lithos and 399 ezio lithos (by Craig Mullins no less).
I can see both sides of the argument easily but I can also see what other big name companies are doing and have experinced even years of comic con and their limited stuff. They don't make more and increase the price they just keep turning out the same numbers and if you get one fantastic if you don't well better luck next time. I know I have missed out on alot of that stuff. Even When Tali and Miranda first came out. I managed to get them on the second chance. I missed the normandy sr-2 and illusive man. But hey I got mini's so it is ok, it all worked out.
