Please help
1.  It’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.

  a.   Is it the console version or the PC version?  (Edit: Most of this is strictly applicable to the PC version.) PC

  b. Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor) Origin download2.

2. System Details

  a. Processor / Core count / Core Speed / Main RAM Amount   Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU  T5550 @ 1.83GHz, 2 core, Clock speed 1830 MHz, 3.99 GB

  b. Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help -- Edited: only ATI / nVIDIA cards are supported)       NVIDA GeForce 8800M GT, Driver version does not display

  c. Sound Adapter / Driver Version   Speakers(IDT High Definition Audio CODEC), Driver version 6.10.5713.0

  d. Operating System (& service pack if applicable) Window Vista

  e. Direct X Version DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later

3.  Problem Details

a.  When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic
questions: Who? What? When? Where?  Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really
apply here, but the others do.

  b.  What?  What is the nature of the problem that you’re seeing? The game would crash during conversation showing up General protection fault

  c.  When?  When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only after so many hours of play? occurs during conversation it could happens from 10 min to 3hrs into the game when talking to someone.

  d.  Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does it occur everywhere? it has usually happens on the normandy but does happen at other places.

  e.  Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps? my character would usually walk up to npc press the E button to start an conversation during in the middle talk the game screen would go down and General protection  fault would appear on the screen with history under it shutting down the game.

If
you follow these guidelines, and provide the requested information when
posting, it will increase the likelihood that someone will be able to
help you diagnose the problem and find a solution.

Please report issues, after checking these steps, in new threads.

I'll take a guess. It's down the graphics card, though I don't knwo why it happens like that.

I had an 8800GT Super+ some time ago, and was very keen on it because on paper it was the best bang for my buck, at the time. Looking back I reckon the card was more power hungry than it was supposed to be, because the 12V aspect of my power supply at the time was not much more than the recommended spec. That and the NVidia driver was pretty bad (though this is all too often a case with most graphics card suppliers).

I uninstalled the card, put in an ATI Radeon HD 4850, updated to the then latest drivers and Mass Effect 1 crashed maybe once or twice for the rest of the entire playthrough. Even then, only standard (*sigh*) CtD / Windows Error Reporting type crahes.

PS: it helps if you don't push the card too hard (e.g. do not try to max out all setting in the Graphics Options), especially as your CPU and memory, while being quite reasonable for Mass Effect 1, are not 'bleeding edge'.

System Requirements

Supported chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT or greater; ATI Radeon X1300 XT or greater. Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.

You havent mentioned how much RAM your video card has, is it dedicated or shared RAM, what its driver version is (get that from the Nvidia control panel), what patch level your game is at.
Did the installation of DirectX9.0c occur when you installed the game? DX10 is not backward compatible enough fpr ME1's requirements. If unsure, download and install it from Microsofts website.

Because you are running a laptop, it could also be a heat related issue.

I didn't notice the "M" on your spec earlier, so there is an extra performance hit there. The Mobility chipsets are not officially supported, but depending on your other system specifications it should be possible to get the game to run with Low to Medium options (maybe).

Ok I'll try to lower the graphic settings on.
