There have been some rumors floating around saying that Shepard may die in ME3. I am totally against this idea; unless it is something like in ME2. Shepard, I think, should not ultamantly die in ME3. If you screw up like in ME2, thats fine, but not for the final end. That would make all our hard work worthless. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Bioware is going to kill Shepard in ME3?

Nah. I think there will be more than one ending, in one of which, Shepard dies. But a inevitable death? No.

BioWare would have many pissed fans.

I hope so, cause I worked hard to get my Paragon, Colonist, War Hero, Vanguard to where he is now

I doubt they will Matirx it. They may, but I would doubt it.

Wouldn't mind it. He died once, and came back. You can only cheat death so many times...

from motnths ago in Game Informer (Thanks to ME3: Known Features for the link)

"The game will have numerous endings, some good, some
bad, and who you have in your squad and which allies you recruit can
have a drastic effect on which are available."

I doubt BioWare is going to kill Shepard, at least not in a scripted death.  I think (and hope and pray) that it will be more difficult for Shep to survive in ME3 than in ME2 and player choice will be pivotal in the outcome. The tagline, "Decide How it Ends!" kind of points to that direction.

Obviously, I won't know until I play the game, but I am a bit torn w/ my canon Shep.  I'd love to see her have a happy ending (as close to one as we can get), but on the other hand, a heroic death would fit her character very nicely.

I agree with ThePwener, lots o books and franchise. Look at it this way, if you just died and beat ME2, then play ME3 and die again it would not be rewarding, lol.

To be honest since Shepard can in theory die twice his/her death is not a shock factor to me anymore.

I mean when I first played ME2 and saw Shepard get spaced.....I dropped my controller and stared aimlessly trying to watch Shepard as he drifted towards the planet below.....

When I went and got him killed in the SM (on purpose) I knew it was comming but what Shepard says before letting go once again I was overcome with saddness....

But a third time...I don't think will carry the same weight I mean it could but I doubt it unless its was something so shocking and dramatic and pulled ALL of the right emotional strings it just won't cut it.

I've never died during the Suicide Mission, so I'm curious.. what does Shepard say beforehand? :D

I'm sure it'll be POSSIBLE. But there has to be multiple endings...and not all of various ways he will die. Ppl get afraid because Casey is glib on if there will be any DLCs and of course it's the end of Shepard's story in ME. That can come off as because he dies. But I don't think they'd universally have endings where he will die and can't ever be alive at the end...

Video linky to shep death
*Shepard hanging on edge of Ship, Joker pinned down unable to help pull Shep up*

Joker: Commander!
Shepard: Joker! Tell them
Joker: You tell them! Your not doing this to me again!
Shepard: You've got to warn them, more of them are coming...
*Joker attempts to pull him up but is unable to*
Shepard: Joker... GO!
*Shepard falls to his/her death, EDI and Joker fly off*

I'm hoping the 'multiple endings' doesn't just mean 2 like it sort of has in the past (although could say 4 in ME if count whom you pick as councillor) and the endings can be variable. The obvious concern of that is happening is with regards making it viable to have any follow up stories that will fit into any potential ending unless the author goes for 'their choice' of ending.

As for 'If Shepard dies, what was the point?' I'll simply say, if Shepard dies but the Reapers are stopped, the point has been achieved, the point in the story imho is that Shepard is there to stop the Reapers even if that means at the expense of his/her life. A point to some extent they emphasised in ME2 during the launch trailer.

Just as long as they don't go the Matrix route, I'll be happy with such an ending

I think they're trying to start an interstellar WARRRRRRRR.

Anyway, I think that since this is the last game in this trilogy, we'll have a nice variety of endings.  Shepard could die, or maybe we find out the Reapers are just really lonely and wants some friends, or this was just a simulation ala Assassins's Creed.

If his/her death influences the war, or even if it doesn't... why NOT? It's not like BioWare will compromise a possible strong point in a story just because fans have "worked on their characters" or something... I don't know. I'm not opposed to the idea at all

I hope they have it the same way ME2 handled it. if you rush into the final battle you die at the last possible moment or you die and the reapers win.

they said you can play after the final mission i believe, so i dont think Shepard will die unless you make some mistakes.

You mean like with Dragon Age: Origins how you can play post-campaign no matter what choice you made?

I believe the post-finale gameplay will be "set" before the actual finale. After you beat the game, you can revert to the last freeroam point and round up any loose ends. Kinda like in ME1, but with less manual savegame reloads involved.

At least that's what I think they said regarding the matter.

I'd rather my Shepard die, nothing wraps up a story better than a sacrificial death (e.g. Alien 3; resurrection doesn't count). Though I'm certain Bioware won't make the mistake of forcing death as the inevitable.

I think there should be more than one ending, but that Bioware should basically do a reverse of what they did in ME2.

In ME3 the ending where Shepard dies should be the best ending. That should be the ending with the least damage done to the galaxy, while the ending where Shepard lives is the less ideal ending.

All great stories worth telling are tragedies. And in all of them the hero always dies.

Achilles
Hercules
King Leonidas
Ellen Ripley
Gladiator
3:10 to Yuma
William Wallace
Macbeth
Hamlet
Othello
Caesar
Donnie Darko
Sherlock Holmes
Les Miserables
John Chrichton
Doctor Who
Optimus Prime
Terry Fox
Marie Curie

... the list goes on
