Last night I finally beat the Rock Wraith at the end of chapter 1 (why is these bosses ending chapters always really hard? but I digress)...since my point is this:

I am not sure I could have done this without two mods that changed the style of the gameplay a little:
1) a mod that let me choose my followers' armour. This means I could give Aveline, Anders and Varric better armor and defense ratings than they had originally.
2) A mod that made e.g. the heal spell cooldown go down to 20 second from 40 seconds, potions cooldowns also went down a bit.

I would like to see a return to full character customization in DA2, because of my experience. I do know, however, that sometimes this isn't just possible, so helmets, gloves and boots vould be made customizeable as well while armor e.g. the middle option in the character paperdoll could not be as it were in DA2. But done so that if you do a follower's personal quest, his or her armour would upgrade, and not just a bit - but get a significant boost to say defense or armour rating. If you gain friendship points their trust in you could rise, then it could mean that their dexterity or some stat or skill got better, the same if you gained rivalry points.

I want the old DA:O armor system. Everyone can wear everything as long as they have the stats. "Unique" armors are boring and sometimes even... implausible. Cloth isn't nearly as sturdy as this game makes it seem.

Also, I guess I just liked the idea of finding lots of armors and equipment for the party... it may be old school, but it isn't a bad system.  I think it's far superior to what we have now, with pretty much everything you find that isn't suitable for Hawke's class instantly becoming "junk."

For me, I liked the unique looks to the DA2 characters. BUUUT I wanted a visual progression of a decade passing. If I buy/found an upgrade for a character's armor, I want that upgrade to be seen or affect the look. Maybe it will add to the character's design.

Although seeing Isabela in naught, but boot and some tunic covering was .... "ok... sure why not?" *as my mind was suspended in disbelief*. I'm all for party characters to have their own unique look to them ... as long as it makes sense to their character AND for combat. Some armor won't hurt.

If time is suppose to pass and change, show it visually not just by text. Video games now are becoming more cinematic and cutscene-y. Utilize it to full advantage.

I support the idea of borrowing the ME1 system of casual outfits for the home base and in the field having armour. You as the player would have no control of your companion's casual appearance but you could find several different armour sets for your companions - perhaps treat it much like Hawke so there is Act I, II and III armour sets representing increasing power throughout the game.

So as a casual example Anders could start in all but refugee clothes in Act I but by Act III isn't trying to hide anymore and could be wearing something completely different.

In terms of customising the party perhaps you could choose from a selection of upgrades - perhaps take the armour to the local Sandal clone and he offers the choice of +x mana, +x% crit chance, +x health regen etc... allowing you to keep distinctive visual styles but emphasise certain aspects of the character to help with certain builds. Want Isabella as a tank choose +dodge chance, prefer to keep her as DPS choose +crit damage.

Could still leave a rune slot or two to allow for certain bosses etc although if we are relying on armour runes I would strongly prefer them to have rather more impressive effects (and prices).

I like casual at home and war-style armor out in the field. Also if more time is going to pass between acts, it'd be cool for everyone to get new casual at home clothes. Something about wearing the same stuff all the time that reminds me of Scooby Doo. Zoinks!
I don't mind companions having their own special looking armor but it would be nice if they had pieces that show up as you find them. Or if we find armor around that our character can't use, the stats are transferable.

Me personally, I'd like to see a combination of both. I much prefer the system in DA:O, but I would create a system where if you want to keep your companions looking "unique" then have slots available where you can upgrade the armor to make it more powerful depending on your choice (ice, fire, nature powers and/or resistances) and possibly even change the colors of the wardrobe.

HOWEVER, I'd still like full customization. If I want to dress my mage or rogue in armor, I'd like to be able to do that! If I find an incredible weapon or piece or armor, I'd like the option to place it on my tank, or my healing mage, or my stealth rogue, etc. I think there is room for doing both in the game! Combine those elements of both games, and you'll please just about everyone!

I like the fact that your party were dressed to fit their personality and didn't end up looking like clown(Morrigan when you put robes and mage hat on her in Dao , for example).
I 'm not really interested in armor upgrade etc , it bores me mostly.
The only thing , in DA2 , in 10 years they should have change their clothes a bit.It goes from clown to Batman uniform , but it's still an improvement.

What I'd like to see in DA3 is a compromise. Make companions' armor unique, but give us a selection of unique armors for each character and let us choose which one to equip.

I support this option as well. It would be even better if we can choose what type of upgrades we want to add to a companion's armour - upgrades that don't change their appearances and aren't restricted to an specific set, and only change the armour's stats.

What I'm trying to say is, for example, an armour can have four upgrades at most. Let the player choose from about ten upgrades what they want to add to the armours. Someone might want to make Fenris a DPS. Someone might want to make him a tank...

Having abilities like that makes it easier for people to role play. We all like having more freedom in a game.

I like the unique looks for the companions, and i didn't mind the lack of ability to fiddle with stats; the problem is the lack of visual progression in the characters (for the most part; there was a little progression, just not enough).

I don't really feel like the game mechanics behind companion equipment need to change, just the visual elements. With that in mind, I see three ways they could change it in DA3 that would satisfy me:

1. New look for each act. Assuming they stick with the act system for the next game, they could make it so each act sees characters with a new look, to represent the passing of time. DA2 actually had a little of this with Aveline, with her wearing her leathers in the prologue, guard armor in act 1, and guard captain armor in act 2. Sure, the change between act 1 and 2 wasn't huge, but it was there. Seeing that for all characters would be nice.

2. Upgrades have visual elements. Simple enough, the armor stat upgrades we can get our companions get a graphical element that's added to the character model. For example, if an upgrade is called 'reinforced bracers', then they add some bracers to the character model.

3. Do both. Outfits change with each act, and each outfit has add-on elements for the upgrades. Obviously the most resource-intensive option, but would provide the biggest sense of visual progression, while still providing unique looks for companion characters.

I want companion outfit customization again like in DA:O. I mean it was retarded picking up all this loot and not being able to use it on Hawke but you can't make your companions wear it. Come on Bioware don't be lazy or cutting corners now.  Put the time and effort in and MAKE THE OUTFITS.

I was 100% fine with the system for companion armour used in DA2.

I could probably get used to a little change, like changing the stats a little for some companion armour/clothes based on their function in my team (DPS vs Tank, healer vs force mage, etc). It would also be nice if I could change the colour or design of their clothes a little, as long as it wasn't too much of an effort.

But if change meant that I had to spend hours in the menus, comparing stats, I'd prefer that the system be kept as it is in DA2. When I'm working, I only have a little time in the evenings for playing and that means that I don't have time playing "paper dolls".

Also, armour should preferably come as a set. I want my Hawke and his/her companions to look nice. :)

Edit: Also, as others have pointed out, it would have been fun if companion armour had changed after the time skips. It's not necessary for me, but it would have been a nice touch and highly appreciated!

Well, I was poking around the community reception thread and noticed Mr. Laidlaw mentioning that this issue is currently being discussed and that the time is right for community feedback, so let's have it!

I posted this before in that thread you mention, but it seems better suited here. I hope it is alright for me to copy/paste:

I am very fond of the set follower armor system, but I think it can be improved. Here are my thoughts:

My reasons for liking set follower amour:

- To me, looks are (almost) more important than function. I prefer a good looking suit of armor to a boring looking suit of armor with better stats and I like my followers to have individual looks. In origins I sometimes mistook Leliana for my character, because they wore the same type of armor.
- I liked not having to waste a lot of time comparing different types of equipment stat wise for all my companions (I try to use all of them). I prefer actually playing the game, than being stuck a long time in my inventory screen. I also loved the few evolving items out there, because it meant even less time stuck in the inventory screen and I didn’t have to swap out a cool looking item because it became useless.

Ways to improve set follower armor:

- I would like to be able to buy upgrades that change the look of the armor, like skins for your cell phone. Maybe you could have similar upgrades to normal armor as well. Something that would override the original look of whatever you are wearing. That way you wouldn’t have to choose between looks and stats. The “skins” for the follower armors would off course be in a style fitting for that companion.
- I think there should be a set number of upgrade slots for your companion’s armor, but that you should be able to choose what kind of upgrade to add. If I use Fenris as a tank I would like to be able to add more armor, but as DPS he would benefit more from other stats. That would make the followers armor more customizable, but they would still be unique.

I realize that it looks like I want my characters to be like Barbie dolls.. But hey, I want to look cool while I am taking down my enemies Image IPB. It may also look like I hate the inventory screen, but I don’t. I just don’t want to spend too much time there, because it disrupts the flow of the game.

If Bioware decide to revert to customizable follower armor I hope they add a lot of evolving armor/weapons in the game to “compensate” players that liked the set follower armor system. If I got lots of evolving items I wouldn’t mind the old system..

A complete rollback to Origins' system. That was one of those things they did perfectly in Origins. Well, maybe not 100% perfect - you couldn't remove characters underwear - but close to perfect. Made you really fell like characters are your own - all of them, not just your char.
For me, fixed appearance ruined large part of the fun (in DA2, unlike in Origins, I've never controlled chars other than my own, only issued commands to them during pause when absolutely needed).

I think the companions having their own outfits makes the characters look great throughout the game. The problem is that they look the same throughout the game.
I think a better system is to make each armor upgrade have a visual impact on the outfit. Give us choice with how we upgrade the armor and make those choices meaningful.
The loot has to start cool and get even better from start to finish. Managing boring rings and amulets for companions is more often a chore than a blessing.

I like everyone to have an unique outfit and sometimes a weapon, like Varric's Bianca, that fits them.

In my first playthrough of Origins, without using mods, my companions ended up in bland outfits which made them look like any other NPC. I also spent hours at camp in the inventory screen trying to figure out what fits who, time I rather spend actually playing the game. ^_^ I think the protoganist's companions have to look unique, their face and their outfit. I always keep Morrigan in her Wilds Robe, even though as the game progresses the stats were quite low compared to other, more bland outfits. So for the companions that don't have their own unique outfit, I give them one through the use of mods. One that I believe they would actually wear, not those skimpy chainmail bikini mods.

I like that in DA2 I didn't have to deal with the hassle of trying to give them unique outfits, because they already had them. I also like how they had an unique body model. Aveline had strong arms, Isabela had bigger breasts, it all fits them, instead of everyone having the exact same body model. In Origins it was weird to see every mage have muscles like you expect a warrior to have. I always thought magic didn't require much physical power but more mental power, so I believe they should have less muscles.

I definitely wouldn't have any objection against companions having several unique outfits to choose from, or their outfit changing because of a certain plot event. Or maybe you could find several upgrades in the game that slightly alters their armour, like shoulder pads or more fortified ones if they didn't have them already, or a little chest plate for extra defense. But if that is too much work I'd be happy enough with one unique outfit.
