Dwarves smell bad!
With all them dwarves running around the deep roads the place really started to stink.
One not so smart dwarf, wanting to be made Paragon for inventing something great, decided fans were the answer to get the awful smell out of the deep roads. Ventilation and such.
How does one create fans? One creates an idol. Fans will automatically follow.
