A Rocket Propelled Grenade.
There is no other definition, the rest are invalid

Character, gameplay, story. It doesn't need to be any more complex than that.

It does and it is. Your definition is so loose that you may as well declare all video games to be RPGs.

That's why "what is an RPG" threads always end up in screaming matches. There is no answer, or rather, there are as many answers as there are gamers.

I already posted the correct answer.

Fail.  Many games do not have stories.  SMB, racing games, desktop tower defense.  Premise != story.

Invalidated.  Continue.

Again, your definition is extremely loose. It applies to so many games that it doesn't mean anything.

Invalidated.

In your dreams.

Any game with a main plot, subplots and character development which engages the player can loosely fit as my own deffinition of a roleplaying game. My deffinition of a "good" roleplaying game is far more complex.

So Max Payne is now a role-playing game.

Maybe you should reconsider your definition. Or better yet, instead of constructing your own definition you could use the real definition that I posted earlier.

Occam's power wash.  I just washed all the poop out of what you quoted.  Character, gameplay, story.  That's all.

Max Payne is an fun game with good character, great action, and a fun story.  That's what matters.

Your definition, immaterial.  :(:(:(

Maybe invalid to you, but this is a thread about opinions, so it's valid to me. Any game that has a plot and developed characters a player can control has roleplaying elements to me.0

It's far more of a role playing game if you can make decisions which effect the plot and the development of characters within it. From there, at least to me, I can go on to define what is an actual "good" roleplaying game.

When attempting to define things I usually try to start with simplicity and brevity then work towards something more specific as the situation warrants.

BC2 and MGS4 are not CRPGs.

Taken from the Top 10 RPGs thread.

I think they are both rpgs.

Do they involve playing different roles? Yes.

Do they have stats and loot? MGS4 offers stats AND loot, but BFBC2 just has statts (grenades might count as loot, though)

You are wrong. Your opinion does not matter.

Mario Brothers? No story, just a premise. Not an RPG. Grand Theft Auto 2? Character, gameplay, story. RPG.

When people have the "what is an RPG" argument, what they are really arguing about is gameplay. The threads would be better titled "how do you like your story presented?" Spreadsheet based math battles that payoff in loot and carefully doled out lore reveals? Or dialogue heavy cut scenes where people curse and demand and rage and then slap each other in the external genitalia with battle axes?

That's why "what is an RPG" threads always end up in screaming matches. There is no answer, or rather, there are as many answers as there are gamers.

Ultimately, "RPGs" are already dead. This is pure win. Now development studios can get on with packing and selling great characters doing interesting things in fun stories.

Thank.You. What he said.

And while we're at it, why do RPG's always have to rip off Lord of the Rings? Mass Effect and Fallout are taking us to strange new places. So why must we always be hanging out with Dwarves and Elves?

TW doesn't rip off LOTR. Most other fanatsy games do, and with reckless abandon. that includes DA:O.

No but it does take place in that standard fantasy setting which looks like Medieval England (you were referring to Two Worlds?). I'm just sick of RPG's that are obsessed with swords and spells, it's like FPS games always have to be set in the military. Let's do something else for a change and break out of the comfort zone.

RPG discussion is always and always will be just a matter of taste. My own emphasis is on the word ROLE from role playing game. And with that I mean a role you as the player chose. This is why I also consider loot (you chose what to wear, no matter how small the difference), stats (again, no matter how small a difference they make, they add up in the end) and adventures (quests & ending affected by choices you make) part of an rpg.

The general problem with rpg discussion is always the fact that the term in it's self is so vague. Playing a role can be anything from a straight up shooter to a deep conversation game or pen and paper games. Just like music, the term has to be broadened if you want to actually categorize anything.

pen & paper -> dungeons and dragons
oldschool rpg -> baldur's gate, icewind dale, dragon age origins, mass effect 1
action/combat rpg -> mass effect 2, diablo 1-2, the witcher 1-2, gta (all, depending on playstyle), deus ex 1-2
story driven rpg -> silent hill, gta (all, depending on playstyle), vampire: the masquerade + bloodlines

As you can see if you take everything from character customization to making choices or talking to npc characters you can label pretty much any game under rpg. If you want to make a difference between games you have to either just go with "good, average, bad" or then use sub-categories of the genre.

Then why will Bioware label ME3 as an RPG on the box? Guaranteed they will. They won't say 'could be an rpg, maybe not, depends on your definition'. On the forums the devs say it's all relative, and GTA4 and COD are RPG's as well.

Um..ok.

That's just like I said. Those games have elements of rpgs too. That's the whole thing. If you (or in this case Bioware) decides what defines an rpg then pretty much any game fits in there somewhere. Game companies will never start using anything like "old school rpg only" or "story based pen and paper rpg" because that narrows the potential audience. The more vague they advertise, the more people will find it interesting before trying it.
