May I post a simple answer, they got the name of the old god wrong, it said it was believed to be Dumat, but it could have been one of the other old gods and Dumat could still be asleep somewhere.

Quite possible, yes.

The Shrine of Dumat might be proof that Dumat walked there, or dwelled there or nearby, and may still be there. But that doesn't mean that is who reached out to the magisters. I'm inclined to think that if Dumat was not actually involved, it was another god/powerful being disguising himself as Dumat - speaking in Dumat's name.

Or the magisters chose to believe they were working with Dumat. Perhaps they called out to him, laid offerings at the Shrine, etc. Someone/something answered back through that window of communication - they thought it was Dumat, but it wasn't.

Darkspawn don't require food for sustenance. The corruption within them keeps them alive. They can eat... but if they do so they do it for reasons other than dietary.

Edit: oops, this link is in the thread already, my bad. :P

At least you sort of confirmed it is the same thread. :)

I have only had just enough coffee to shamble about and feign coherence, though clearly not enough to prevent being repetitive. Sorry for that. But if validaiton is needed...  Image IPB

Regarding immortality - I don't want to presume to speak for Darius Vir (and he is free to correct me), but I think he was saying that it was immortality after a fashion - the semblence of immortality. At least that's how I read it. Please see the bolded part below:

No, no. I wasn't particularly addressing Darius. I just took one reference and put the question out to whomever might be interested in answering.

So immortal in the sense of "no death by natural causes, no death by disease, no death by the normal cycle of decay of the flesh." Not true immortality, no, but longevity that has the appearance of immortality. It takes something else to kill a darkspawn - a good blade and such. But if left to fend on their own without any conflict or threat, their lifespan, as it were, might be considerable.

But again, I could be wrong, and terribly presumptuous in my interpretation.

No, your right on. What you said is exactly what I am questioning. Are darkspawn really immortal (don't age)? Does the taint sustain them forever? If so, did David Gaider ever confirm it? Or is it just interpretation of what he said? If you go through the links I posted, he was simply answering whether darkspawn eat. He wasn't saying anything about their not aging - not directly anyway.

It's just that over the last few days I've seen several references to darkspawn immortality. I found and read that thread about 2 days back and came to the same conclusion. Today for some reason, I just thought, wait a minute...

Ah, ever-cryptic, that Gaider. Giving us just enough to whet the appetite. Dropping breadcrumbs along the trail to...the witch's house? (That really puts the whole Flemeth thing into perspective.)

Sadly, I think this is yet one more area where vagueness is going to be our only foundation, at least for now. Perhaps until we stumble upon some crumbling scrap of paper in-game that is a recorded account of the last days of the oldest Warden-turned-ghoul/darkspawn, and Ser Skeletal Limbs indicates that he is 300+ years old.

The skill with which the Bioware team dances around questions should be a specialization - Advanced Inquiry Evasion - unlockable for the Bard class only. Image IPB

The OP in that thread did ask the specific question, here. However Gaider simply chose not to reply. I don't think it was the case that he didn't see the question. He seemed to be following that thread closely.

Nope, you're right!

I did mean a qualified immortality....they can be killed/die, but without a force acting on them from the outside they won't die from old age and will linger indefinitely.

You know guys, I don't remember ever reading THE exact quote or thread from Gaider.  But I saw posters on the boards mention it specifically enough times that I believed (believe) this was accurate.

I get the feeling that there is no other link. I intend to treat darkspawn immortality as speculation henceforth.
