If the amulet literally contained a piece of her, her shapeshifting powers and need to possess daughters could make sense in that she can morph herself anyway she pleases, but it's within the confines of a body with aging cells that still tick down the clock of her biological age no matter what form she's in.

If it just contained a spiritual essence and she could literally reform any way she wishes, I can't grasp how aging would be relevant to her. Unless a 'soul' ages. And she can renew it by... absorbing a younger one.

Maybe it's a Countess of Bathory thing - she needs the nubile young women to act as Oil of Olay. A soul aging is an interesting concept though...

The hardest thing for me with regard to Flemeth-based speculation is that she is more enigma than anything else. She operates so outside the realm of what we know. She isn't an abomination exactly, she isn't a darkspawn, she isn't a standard shapeshifter, etc. She blurs lines like crazy. And I'll admit to not being the shapeshifting expert, like certain distinguished bears I know.

With regard to possession though, and souls colliding - why couldn't souls merge? Even if Riordan was talking about a big internal soul bomb occuring, what if that isn't what truly happens (or only happens with Wardens and Archdemons - again, could be propaganda). This hearkens back to your Wil save idea - maybe the greater/stronger soul simply absorbs the other, or diminishes it so much so that the lesser acts only as a repository of files - memories and such. Maybe if that lesser soul weakens to the point of dying, then the possession breaks.

Again, I just don't know. And I need to consult some codexes. :/

I remember Morrigan saying something about the body she inhabited still grows old and (I think senile) pointing to the fact if she stays in a body till the cognitive processes have deteriorated then she might not have enough higher functioning to perform the body swap ritual...
