I'm a little hesitant to believe that since you said that legion wasn't a squadmate before ME2 came out. Also, there was the afterlife music playing through that episode. Afterlife + Aria looking asari, what could it mean?!?

There was also music from Arrival used in a lot of the E3 footage. I'm sure it's all placeholder at this point.

I have no idea who it is. I haven't played the area she's working on in that clip, so I can't say it is Liara, Aria, unknown asari #743, etc. When we make games, we slot in whatever placeholder art is available. Just because it was an asari image, it may not have even been an asari squadmate, it could have been a human or krogan or whatever. It is much more likely that it represents "female squad member" than an actual asari squad member.

Still, have at the speculation till you see the real thing. :)

Aria? :D

Yes please!!! =]

The coloration is right.

Would've preferred a certain green Asari...but this will do nicely :)

Edit: I just remembered.....Shiala was quite purple before the Thorian spores messed with her.  If she got over the Thorian exposure, it could still be Shiala:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Hey guys, I'm sure Bioware would make Aria's face a placeholder squaddie icon for no reason at all! Makes sense, right?

Good eye, OP!

First we know for certain it is not Liara. Because if it was her then the placeholder would be the face icon of lair of the shadowbroker. or a cutout of the mass effect 1 portrait. You wouldnt create a placeholder portrait for a character that you already have a portait for from a previous game.

Second the color, if it was samara/morinth then you would have used the mass effect 2 icons as placeholder. If you are making a new portrait then there is an additional problem. Why would the color be dark blue/Purple. No self respecting artist would get something as basic as the skin color of a character wrong by that much. (even as an initial sketch/concept piece for an already established character)
Also the portraits in ME2 were renders of the character models. And from what i have seen of the ME3 footage that has not changed. Why would you render a thumbnail image of that size of a character model that was not going to be used when you have the character models for Liara and Samara already done. And the render of those characters at that resolution would take a few seconds at most.

Also the character portair has already recieved alpha maps. If its a placeholder then why does it already have alpha's when it you wouldnt need to do that if it is just a placeholder image. (granted some rendering techniques bake an alpha in)

So given the evidence here. Its either Aria or a new Assari squadmate.
seeing as the new mass effect evolution comic is centered around Aria and her conflict with Cerberus, and it is set between Mass Effect 2 and 3. My money is on Aria

Yes, but that was in game. This was an developer diary. The music wasn't coming from the level they were displaying, it was a track they set for the background of the video, therefore not a placeholder since it was never in the level to begin with. ;)

Hmmm, Cerberus facility... "Aria" squad mate... Why do I suddenly have O'Ren Ishii's Board Room speech running through my head, when I think of a certain asari being -1 daughter.

God you people don't know **** about game design and it shows. Cosmetic crap like icons are the last thing devs add in the game. Have any one of you considered that the overall game is NOT as polished as the E3 Demo? Because it's just that, a demo? It is in no way representative of the overall technical progress of the game. I don't think devs give much importance about having the right icons for their experimental build. Notice how they also have an old "Garrus" icon too?

yes but if its just an old character why bother putting a new icon there. why not use the ones you already have?
its more trouble to put a new placeholder icon there than to just recycle an old one. as they did with the garrus one.

also mass effect 3 is built on mass 2 code the character classes probably have not changed that much since they are still using the same unreal 3 engine. so if they add a character like liara or samara the icon associated with that character would most likely apear from the ME2 assets. this however is a new icon.

If it's true that it's Aria - and it probably is - at least we will finally get an answer to the age-old question whether she is Aleena or not, since we're bound to run into Wrex at some point.

I hope this doesn't confirm my worst fear: that Mass Effect 3 will be one giant fan-service.

I love Aria, but I just can't see why/how/when she could possibly be working together with Shepard.

If it is Aria, she'll more than likely just be a temporary teammate.

How does having Aria in the game all of a sudden make the game a fan-service?

My educated (and wild) guess:

TIM takes over Omega with the reaper-thingies from Invasion and uses it as a Cerberus headquarter. Aria is forced to flee the station, and turns to the one person that she knows is capable enough to deal with TIM. Or something zany like that.

A temp squaddie is better than nothing, I hope we can have a proper chat with her, she may be dangerous but the way she says that shep should find a nice young man or women shows that she does like Shepard to some ******. And maybe care forhim/her as a friend.

The ME2 icons were on a computer three rooms away. So they used an icon that was underhand right there and then. No need to speculate further than that, much less discourage Mr. Priestly to post here altogether. The subtle bashing alone he got for these three pages? He's a normal human being, who sometimes makes mistakes, sometimes makes assumptions. No need to demand stuff, people. Be patient.
