With a Rogue as my Warden, I like to scout out a situation before taking any action with my companions.  I'm used to playing D&D-style (Neverwinter Nights, etc.), where combat does not start for everybody as soon as one of the party triggers the game's Combat Mode.  In DAO you know when Combat Mode starts because the combat music starts playing, and your more aggressive companions (like Dog) immediately dash off to attack the nearest enemy.  I much prefer the D&D system because I had a lot more control over when to enter combat and when not to.  Be that as it may, I need to learn how to work within this game's parameters.  So I need your advice.

This is my main question that I would like answered --> I want to have more control over the situation, so should I set my companions' Combat Tactics to Passive so that they don't take any action until I have figured out what they (and I) should do?  Then when I have scouted (using Stealth) and have formed a plan of action, I can reset their Combat Tactics back to where they were before we entered Combat Mode.

I started playing this game on my PC (running under Windows XP)  two and a half years ago as a S&S Human Noble Warrior and got up to Castle something-or-other (Redcliffe?) but stopped playing because of video problems (screen would flicker and the game would freeze).  I've returned to playing it again, this time with the DAO Ultimate Edition for the Mac, hoping that no video problems will occur.  Anyway, so I vaguely remember the problems I had controlling the party members and am trying to set things up so as to avoid them this time around.  I remember using the H (Hold/Follow) key a lot, and I also remember that it was a heck of a job trying to maneuver them (singly or in pairs or as a group) so that they would be positioned exactly as I thought best.  My companions were Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana.

For your video problems...disabled Frame Buffer Effects >.> that useless piece of garbage was one of the major sources of the game crashing for no apparent reason.

The best way to control when your companions attack is through their Tactics the \\ button. You can alter when they attack, why they attack, who they attack, what they attack with, and their general behavior (Ranged = ranged weapons, aggressive = chaaaaarge, cautious = let's see what happens...).

I set all my tactics to attack enemies of rank elite or higher with single target spells/talents. This way, they don't waste powers. I also set up panic buttons such as mind blast when surrounded by three or more. If there is room, I'll add potion use.

Next, I have auto pause set for start of combat. I pause and ctrl-A all through out combat to micro manage my party and have them concentrate on one target.

I use Morrigan to sleep or the paralyze the mob.  Wynne tries to immobilize the boss.  Morrigan debuffs the boss.

Thank you (both of you)!  Very helpful information!  Um, what does CTRL-A do?  Your tactic of setting auto pause for the start of combat is what I was looking for, I think.  How does one set autopause for the start of combat?

I ordinarily set melee fighters to Defensive, and mages/archers to Ranged. It seems to work fairly well. Don't need to micromanage a whole lot. The only character I have to keep a close eye on is Morrigan, who tends to run into the center of clustered enemies when I have her tactics set to do crowd control (sleep, waking nightmare, etc.).

I've had some problems with crashes as well. Fairly predictable as to when they occur. Demons exploding into a flash of fire, certain area of effect spells.... Generally I just change the video settings and play through those sections in a smaller sized window.

Never used ctrl-a myself. I select characters using shift+F1,F2,F3,F4 or some combination of the four. Selecting the two melee fighters to have control over while leaving the two ranged characters to run on tactics often works well. Change the "move freely" icon to the "stay in place" icon if you want the ranged characters to stay in a certain position while moving the other two. That icon is located beneath the photos of the characters on the left hand side of the screen.

Im not understanding the problem here. Ive never had my party run off out of my control when im scouting in stealth as a rogue.

Set party to Hold and go stealth and wander off. If you have higher ranks of stealth you can disable traps and set them traps while stealthed.

CTRL-A selects the entire party.  But, I did not know that shift-F* selects party members.  I'll have to use that.  Also, I haven't used behaviors other than the defaults because I tend to not trust AI and micro-manage.

Auto-pause is set in the options menu.

One of the most important keys for scouting and Area of Effect spells is "H" (hold). Once you press it, the party, except whoever person you have selected, will stop where they are, and won't move until you pres "H" again.

More importanly, held party member still have their tactis active. Mages and archers will keep attacking, and so will melee fighters should an enemy wander too close to their position (but tehy won't chase then)
