This
month’s challenge is “Planescape Content”. How about
the good and neutral aligned Outer Planes? CODI gave us a lot of cool
demons and devils and yugoloths but what do we have to keep the
balance in the Multiverse? In the end we're all going to Hell (or the
Abyss) if we don't get more back-up from the Upper or Neutral Planes!
Creatures dwelling the Outlands would be a challenge, too. But not
necessarily only creatures, heck, I'd welcome any type of Planescape
content to complement what CODI begun and allow builders to take a
break from the Forgotten Realms for a change.

This
theme was suggested by Olivier
Leroux.

Rules:
  • It
must be fully working in game.
  • Use
of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though
state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work,
    but that's up to you.
  • Teamwork
    is welcome.
  • Beginners
most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

All
submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to me
(NWNCCCMakers @ gmail.com – minus the spaces obviously) or a link
provided by Sept 1st (which is a Thursday) at 8 am EST .
Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;)

***
Please do NOT post your content separately on the Vault.***

  • Some
things you could include in the download/email that would make
packaging everything up easier and faster (otherwise we will just
    pester you with questions!):
  • 2da
    lines needed
  • Screenshot
for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to
    display the new goodie)
  • Portraits
(if needed) of your new goodie
  • Any
    credits you would like listed
  • If
this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like
your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content
if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally
    optional).

Remember,
the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

Regards,

Karvon for Spirited Lass

Could anybody point me to some information about planescape? I'm not familiar with planescape, so I have no idea what to make for this challenge :P

Maybe this thread could serve as a starting point for inspiration and further research. It also contains a few links to pictures and informations.

What type of custom content do you have in mind, what are you most comfortable with?

I made some 64x64 coins, plates, insignias, whatever they can be used for of the Sigil Factions. Also added in the Sigil ID form I found online as a 64x32 icon and working on some other stuff.

Zwerkules, there is no conceivable definition for Planescape content. It basically means that anything that could exist in any plane of existence is up for grabs. Thats the setting. However usually when people think of this sort of thing they are thinking about the City of Doors (thats what CODI was focused on). its basically a city in the outter planes that is connected to every plane of existence and thus the typical bar there resembles the Cantina from Star Wars.

Personally, I'd be delighted to finally see some of the so far neglected standard races from the Planescape setting released, that is the githyanki/githzerai, the bariaurs, the modrons, aasimar and genasi (of earth, wind, water and fire), ideally with some variety. We already have quite a few tieflings, thanks to CODI, although one can never have enough of them.
;)

Githyanki "resemble tall, gaunt humanoids with almost skeletal features. Their garb tends to be ornate." They are fierce warriors and mages of the Astral plane of neutral evil alignment with a deep hatred for the illithids, their former slavers, out for revenge and conquest, and they travel around in airships.

Githzerai are their more moderate cousins who despite sharing the same hatred for illithids oppose the aggressive way of the githyanki towards other races and are therefor in constant feud with them. They are described as follows: "very human, though they are thinner and their skin tone is frequently gray or yellowish. They are, on average, six feet in height and about one hundred sixty pounds in weight. Most have a high natural resistance to magic. Most Githzerai roaming the Planes are either monks, mages, or rogues. Combinations thereof are also possible. They seldom become priests. Instead of worshipping a god—a form of slavery, in their opinion—they revere the memory of their ancient hero, Zerthimon. His followers call themselves zerth. Unlike their relatives the githyanki, the githzerai do not normally fight with weapons, nor do they utilize long-distance psionic attacks against their enemies. Their combat abilities—including their psionic powers—are geared more toward unarmed combat, hence the large number of githzerai who become warrior monks."

Bariaurs are similar to centaurs but goat-like with horns protruding from their forehead, and they are very proud and try to downplay their animalistic nature and kinship to centaurs by dressing elegantly.

Modrons "are mechanical looking creatures native to the outer plane of Mechanus. Modrons resemble geometric shapes with humanoid limbs and represent a living, physical manifestation of law without regard to good or evil. They follow a strict hierarchy, with each rank reporting to the rank directly above it, and issuing commands to the ones ranking beneath it."

Genasi are half-humans (or humanoids) partly descending from elementals, the most common are Water, Fire, Earth and Wind Genasi. Aasimar are descendants of the union between angels and humans and tieflings are half-fiends.

(More info and pictures can be found in the thread I linked to above.)

I know some CC creators have made promising attempts at recreating some of these races, but as far as I know none of their work has officially been released and made available to the community at large yet.

  • Invisig0th was working on a dynamic githyanki race but he recently announced he might take his leave from NWN, I can't say what will become of it.
  • Phoenix aka Uncager created some awesome gith heads (1, 2, 3). He also experimented with a bariaur model, based on the 1.69 satyrs.
  • Paganini is working on a quadrone model (square modron), and CODI already left us with a monodrone (round modron), as well as Primus and Secundus models.
It would be cool to know at what stage these projects are and if they are likely to be finished and uploaded to the Vault. And maybe they inspire others to come up with new models for the missing Planescape races, too.

But, as Henesua says, in theory everything is fair game in the Planescape multiverse, so I hope no CC creator shies away from the theme! :)

I'll contribute some githyanki stuff if I have time. I've had some work-in-progress stuff on the backburner for a while (as Oliver knows), but I'm fairly up to my neck at the minute. Fingers crossed, though!

While not part of our challenge, this recent post by Shemsu-Heru fits. Posting here to avoid duplication of effort. =)

Skyboxes would be a cool challenge, too. I know there are some great skyboxes out there, some of them weird enough to fit the Planescape setting, but are there any to represent the elemental planes? The Abyss? Or even more challenging and interesting: Mechanus (cogs & gears) or Sigil (the City of Doors is built like the inside of a ring, so the sky is actually the other side of the city, upside down).

Planescape skyboxes! That would be nice for a wide variety of uses. I particularly like the mix of crazy ones from Izk the Mad. http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=7964

Phoenix aka Uncager created some awesome gith heads (1, 2, 3). He also experimented with a bariaur model, based on the 1.69 satyrs.

It's my understanding that Phoenix had shut down his Polish WiP server "In the Cage" late last year and has officially abandoned it, I assume everything he was working on going with, which is unfortunate. Even the forums where he had posted photos of his content and conversions was shut down after a sombre "have no time for this anymore" goodbye.

He had managed to convert the Genasi heads from NWN2 over and, even with Este's steady guidance, that is a bit beyond me at the moment. I had hoped he was still lurking around these forums but I've never received an answer to an inquiry I left some months ago.

All I can say to that is that he's announced his willingness to participate in the challenge in this very same thread three days ago (under the name "Uncager"), so thankfully it seems he is still lurking around here and still interested in creating custom content occasionally!

*bids Phoenix a warm welcome* :)

A lot of content that was preparing for my module was convert from NWN2 and Purgatorio, so I didn't publish them. :(

Publish them anyway, dude. The community would benefit from them. Just give credit to where they're from and you should be safe!

I'd love to see these as well! Not being an NWN2 player I've had to go off the screenshots and some of the stuff I remember seeing looked really nice. Don't most of the folks who worked on that hang out in the #nwn2cr channel?

This is what I get for skimming posts instead of reading.

Good to see you still here, Phoenix / Uncager. The work you put in is admirable.

Ugh... Despite my dislike for the 4e game rules and how it bent the Planescape setting over the table, I do have to admit that I like the atmosphere in this picture. Which displeases me immensely as I had left NWN far behind me.

Curse you, Birdman, curse you to the Mazes! Posted Image

Would anyone have an idea what that fiery apparation in the front and the darkly one in the back are? I assume the former is a a sword archon, but I can't make out the one in the back. It looks damned for sure, but I can't name it for the life of me.

The one in the back looks like a Cambion.

Aha, it would appear that you're correct. I did a quick google search and that's indeed cambions according to the reference material I found. Can't say that I approve of the changes that WotC made to this creature, though... It's so different that it doesn't even come close to the original concept anymore.

Sadly this is the case for pretty much anything related to Planescape in 4e... hence my strong dislike for 4e. Posted Image
