I wasnt sure where to post this because it actually concerns all three games.
My question is where on the timeline does Awakening take place?

Before DA2 came out I was under the belief that it took place one year after the events of Origins. This is supported -to me- by a line Oghren has about having been a surface Dwarf for 2 years.

So as far as my understanding goes its Origins: Starts -1 year later- Ends -1 year later- Start of Awakening.

Now if you throw DA2 into the mix things suddenly make no sense. Because DA2 begins the same time Origins does BUT one year into the story things gets weird. So now it looks like:

Origins: Blight Starts - 1 year later- Blight Ends.......................... -1 year later- Meet Anders in Awakening
DA2: Blight Starts - 1 year later- Blight Ends/Meets Anders -Story jumps 3 years later into Act 2-

Image IPBYou see my problem? Am I right to think there is something wrong here? Or... have I missed something?
I've been thinking about this for some time and I am just getting more confused as I think of this. It almost looks like Anders is a time traveler...

So I hope someone can clear this up for me. I also hope none of this counts as a spoiler. I was trying to be as vague as I can while still making sense....

Thanks

You are correct: the timelines don't quite work. It actually would have made sense for Anders to show up in Act 2, although that would change the story quite a bit.

However, Hawke doesn't arrive in Kirkwall until Origins is nearly over. And Awakening starts about six months after the end of the Blight, not a year.

Hawke arrives in Kirkwall shortly before the blight ends. Hawke works in Kirkwall as a mercenary/smuggler for a whole year. Awakening takes place during that time.
So it goes like this:
  • Blight Starts
  • Hawke Flees Lothering
  • Hawk Arrives in Kirkwall
  • One year after starting, Blight Ends
  • Hawk Begins working off debt
  • 6 months later Anders is in Amaranthine, Hawke has been working for 6 months now.
  • 6 months after that Act 1 of DA2 begins, Hawke has been working for a year.
  • A total of 1 year after arrving in Kirkwall Hawke meets Anders (Act 1)

Edit* didnt mean the quote.

The Blight started before the events of Origins actualy and Origens actualy only takes about 10 months of time for the whole game.  Awakening starts around 6 months after this. So its actualy significantly less time has actualy taken place. Not something like 2 years but closer to a year and 4 months.

When Hawke encounters Flemeth it is after the Events of Origin/Ostagar/Lothering, and one of the major plot points (The Circle Tower, Braecillian Forest, Red Cliff, Orzamaar or Urn of Sacred Ashes.) So you are pretty heavily into the timeframe of events in Ferelden/Origins when Dragon Age 2 begins.

Suffice it to say, the timelines are a bit wonky. It's entirely possible for Anders to appear in the first act of DAII, but it means he only spent a few months as a Grey Warden before taking off for Kirkwall.

The Events of Awakening are somehwere close to 2 months in total maybe.. (The distances you travel are significantly less then in Fereleden its like a day or two to travel from the Keep to Amaranathine.

Speaking of the timeline-I noticed a couple of inconsistancies concerning the marriage of Anora and the Warden. According to Awakening, they get married 6 months after the Blight or shortly before he goes to Vigil's Keep. I was playing the beginning of Act 1 in DA2, and Bodahn mentions the Queen and the Warden are already married!

If Act 1 is 1 year after Ostagar, then it should mean that Anora and the warden are married for 6 months before he goes to Awakenings-it only takes a couple weeks to be married. In other words, just after the Blight ends.If Awakenings is right however, they just got married. So which is it?
