When the going gets tough, the tough get going! Besides, quitters never win, and winners never quit.

I will hold the line, no matter the cost. Me and Mordin and Kirrahe. Hopefull we won't get chopped into fishbait or chum.

So  you want the option in the first coversation in the game, they'll be a guys all like "SHEPARD WE NEED YOU TO *LONG INHALE* SAVE THE GALAXY!" and then shepards like "nah f*ck it, I don't wanna" and then the reapers come destroy everything and then the credits roll................

It seems like you want something that is actually quite a large effort, rather than a cool little cutscene, like in Arrival. I would agree with maybe having another video like that under certain conditions if BW had the time and weren't working on anything else, but your idea sounds like it would take up to much time that could be spent on other things.

Well, even if Shepard and the Love Interest did run away... in my imagination I can see them get captured by the Reapers and / or Reaper proxies.

They would be dragged before Harbringer...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Scene:   A gigantic sub-terranean hanger / base - where Harbringer has esconced itself in darkness and ominous backlighting.  Harbringer's thrumming machine voice begins.....

Harbringer:   "Our drones have captured you !  Now you see that resistance is futile !

Shepard:   " I  wasn't resisting....I was going on PERMANENT VACATION !!!  "

Harbringer:   " We recognize you Shepard.. you have disrupted our plans...but you are an annoyance only...
you are insignificant..."

Shepard:    "EXACTLY -  I'm insignificant !   I'm A BUG !   I'm beneath your notice.  Sooooooooo..... if you could let me and my "special friend" over there go.... maybe you could stop noticing me for oh.....how about another thousand years ?"

Harbringer:   " Our plan is unfolding - and you do NOT Escape our notice.  Nothing will be left to chance..."

Shepard:      "OH FRACK it all !....."

Harbringer:   "Now Shepard... disclose your plans to us...

Shepard:      "PLAN !!!!  ???  There ain't NO PLAN !

Harbringer:   ....or we turn you into tapioca pudding.....!!!

Shepard:    " I'VE GIVEN UP !!!    I QUIT !!!    I RESIGNED THE GAME !!!   YOU'VE WON - YOU STUPID GIANT SPACE SQUID !!!    GO AHEAD AND BURN DOWN THE  FRACKING GALAXY FOR ALL I CARE !!! "

Harbringer:   ( processes for microsconds )    Shepard.... you think this defiance will save you....

Shepard:      "Oh PALEO-CHRIST..... !"

Harbringer:     ...It will not !   I will show you TRUE POWER !!! "

Shepard:     " PLEASE DO !!! "

Harbringer:      "You pretend to embrace despair..... your ploy does not fool us !!!"

Shepard:         " Oh Goddess  ! "

( The interrogation goes on like this for hours.... with Harbringer refusing to believe the Commander has given up...and insisting that this is all some kind of elaborate ruse by the Commander.  Torture through pain induction on nerves is implemented .. but the Commander keeps shouting that " It's ALL OVER !!"    Harbringer even grudgingly admires the Commander's strength of will and determination... but repeats the Reaper party line...that they will CRUSH EVERYTHING IN THEIR PATH.... so why not give up now ?

Shepard continues to insist he / she IS giving up !  Frustrated, the Reaper takes a break to confer with it's peers...and orders it's de-evolved servant creatures to move the Commander into a cell.  Exhausted, the Commander and Love Interest collapse into unconsciousness.....)

Meanwhile.....a commando team has landed nearby the Reaper Base.  The team quickly takes out surface resistance near the base maintenance tunnels and works to disable alarms and power to the base.  Lights wink out, and laser barriers fail. The commando team finds the unconscious Commander and L.I. and they are carried back through tunnel to the waiting Normandy... the ship quickly warps away from the Reaper base as an orbital bombardment begins rolling across the surface landscape - wiping out Reaper proxies and their ships.

Commander Shepard awakens to find Commandos, Normandy crew, and Dr. Chakwas all looking down at
him / her in the sick bay....

Joker:   " Commander !  You're back !  You've been rescued from ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH  - AGAIN !

Kelly:  " - And NOW YOU'RE BACK IN THE FIGHT ! "

Shepard:     " NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
I wanted to see the Galaxy BURN !!!   I wanted a VACATION !!! "

Dr. Chakwas:   " Oh dear.... I think the Commander has been indoctrinated ! "

Even though it would of course result in a fail-state, I'd love if games in general simply gave you the OPPORTUNITY to go against the plot just to see what happens- say for example joining Kenson in her little reaper worship thing and then of course the game woujld show reaper annihilation.

Its a video game about saving the galaxy. You want to see the galaxy burn, use your imagination! Kids these days, no creativity.

Dude. You have the option in Arrival of just sitting there and letting the timer run out, and watch the little movie.****, you should just load your game and stare blankly at the wall.

iOnlySignIn wrote...

Perhaps BioWare rpg protagonists are all gifted with an indomitable fighting spirit. Perhaps it's because BioWare itself is a company of extremely dedicated, driven individuals. But there are moments in my RPG experience when I just want to give up, give in, let the rising dark tide swallow my character whole - for a variety of reasons. Anger? Frustration? A deepseated desire to troll? Or simply getting a bit too familiar with the plot variations after the 25th playthrough? I'm sure most of you can relate one way or the other.

In Mass Effect 1, when the Normandy was grounded, I wish I had the option to do nothing. You know, just sit on my behind and let Saren bring back the Reapers and destroy the galaxy and all. Partly because I think Saren has a point. Partly because I'd rather be right than alive. Partly because I think this galaxy is not 100% worth saving.

In Mass Effect 2's Arrival DLC, I wish I had the option to *NOT* activate the Project. You've probably read pages on the moral choice of "kill one to save a hundred", but it's much simpler than that. At the end of the day, Shepard is just a bit tired. Perhapse the Commander wants to see what happens if they give everybody else a chance to save the galaxy. Because why not? Why must one human work their buttocks off saving the galaxy when most other sentient beings just go about their business as usual, oblivious to the struggle?

In Dragon Age: Origins I kind of got my wish. I wish to see what happens if my Warden had refused to join, or had died in the Joining. I got the Darkspawn Chronicles. I did not get to see Alistair & Co.'s pointless struggle in its full course, but it is still morbidly satisfying to see the bad guys win the day for once.

But then came Dragon Age 2. For Creators's sake I don't give a flying toss about the Templar vs. Mage conflict. I just want to build up a fortune, collect some valuable artifacts, and then ride the waves with the fastest ship in the Waking Sea, pillaging and plundering, drinking and gambling, with Isabela. You may say that this is not what the game is about. I respond by saying I'm not asking much. Only a 20 second exposition from Varric. Or maybe just a few lines of floating text in the credit screen. "And then Hawke smiled, turned and walked out of the Gallows, leaving Meredith and Orsino stunned and outraged, and leaving Kirkwall for good." That would suffice.

Maybe it's the Buddhist in me. Maybe it's Zen. Isolating myself above worldly conflicts. Why then do you play a game featuring world-shattering conflicts then, you ask? Well, precisely to have the chance to isolate myself above these conflicts. You know the real zealous dieter doesn't refrain from purchasing cheesecakes. The real zealous dieter buys the cheesecake, and then proceeds to nonchalantly not eat it. That's how dedicated they are. That's their determination. A determination to do nothing.

Please, BioWare, in ME3 give me the option to NOT save the galaxy. Because I'm not feeling like it. Yeah.

Kinda like in Jade Empire where you can allow Master Li to rule? I could see that having the chance to happen but I'm not sure if Bioware will put it in.

But that ending in JE isn't one of just giving up. It's a philosophy, a choice of staying in your station in life (Open Palm)  and accepting Master Li as the Emporer or choosing to step outside of that (Closed Fist) and change things to how you see.

The Open Palm path is about defeating Master Li who stepped outside of his place in life and saving the Water Dragon so that the wheel of life will turn again and harmony will have been restored to the heavens and earth because everything would be back in its proper station in life.

The Closed Fist is about usurping Master Li to take the power for yourself showing that you will determine and make your own position in life and control your destiny not to be ruled over by the beings of heaven for you can have the power of a god and you are strong enough to take it.

In the ending I was refering to Master Li talks you out of fighting him saying it would be the best for the Empire and you sacrifice would be remembered as a noble action of you but I agree that there could be some philosophy to that decision like you feel that it isn't your position in life to challenge him.

I don't see a point to them telling that story, myself. In fact, I don't think it's even a story. It's an abrupt end to the story. In the end, if you really want to see that, just let yourself die in combat. That game over screen? Yeah, it's the same thing you'd get if you gave up. It can be expanded on, but the ultimate result is the same, and, honestly, there are other things I'd prefer they spend their time on. I think letting Shepard have a moment where (s)he needs help going on could be interesting, but that's not what you're asking for.

so you're shepard is a quitter? meh. now if there is a story driven/character driven reason, then yeah, let the galaxy burn for your selfishness. I imagine there will be a "total destruction" type ending, but not because Shepard is a quitter.

This.

If you want to see the end of the Galaxy, just watch the countdown wind down on Arrival. It's almost as good as ***king Morinth.

Options - quit game. There you go. :)

No. No. No. You didn't get the point. I want to witness the galaxy burn down around me while doing nothing to stop it.

A refreshing change from the stereotypical "hero saves the day" story.

I call it "hero could have saved the day but instead waited for hot tea to cool off" story.

Just play Arrival and let the clock run out. It might not be very long but you do get a reapers destroy everything/take over clip. Probably not what you want though but the option is there:P

*edit* I somehow did not see the ^above post. Didn't mean to copy you dude =]

This.

I'm still trying to figure out how, in a game with lots of action oriented elements, that "sit on your ass" could be implemented in a way that's entertaining.

Hint: it couldn't.

To someone who lacks creative imagination, yes.

Have you seen the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" by Sergio Leone? It's set in the American Civil War, about three sharpshooters who want absolutely nothing to do with the Civil War. Watch it, and tell me it's not entertaining.

This idea fails at existence and should be burned at the stake.

Vehement animosity to new ideas is a sure sign of deepseated ignorance and insecurity.

If you feel bored about the game or don't care about the stroy then why continue playing?

What you're suggesting makes no sense. The main goal of the game is be the hero that saves the day. If it was about sitting on a couch while seeing people get killed I wouldn't play it because it wouldn't be entertaining.

I'm not bored of the game. I do care about the story very much. That's why I'd like to give it a different, unconventional ending.

I thought BioWare games are more about being the hero. There are Paragons are Renegades. You can side with different factions. You can be straight or gay. BioWare games are about player choices, most of them diverse, unconventional, or even taboo when first introduced. I'm just introducing an even more unconventional choice - that some people find it heresy worthy of prosecution is evidence to my creative ability.

I loved the Dark Side ending of KoTOR, where the game ends with Revan assuming control of the massive Sith Fleet.

I'd honestly be surprised if there wasn't a similar ending in ME3, either with Sheo joining the Reapers or being defeated by them.

Exactly. And what I like about Revan, especially DS Revan, is that he alone among the millions of sci-fi characters, is above the petty struggle of Good vs. Evil. He uses both Sides of the Force proficiently without loosing his identity to either. His purpose in taking over the Galaxy is something beyond personal gain or personal vendetta. He saw something others didn't.

I think Shepard has the potential to have the same depth of character. I hope BioWare don't waste it.

It seems like you want something that is actually quite a large effort, rather than a cool little cutscene, like in Arrival. I would agree with maybe having another video like that under certain conditions if BW had the time and weren't working on anything else, but your idea sounds like it would take up to much time that could be spent on other things.

Well, you recognized something that most others didn't.

And I mostly agree with you. BioWare's forte is plot, but it can be overdone, and my suggestion is dangerously bordering on overdoing the plot.

But again, if they did it in Arrival, they could do it and do it better in ME3.

[b]Dr. Chakwas:   " Oh dear.... I think the Commander has been indoctrinated ! "

That is EXACTLY how I imagined it.

GMTA indeed.
