I noticed every time something dies, by Alistar or Leliana or Zevran, they get a number with (e.g.) 74xp flash above their head. Now I know this is split between all the people in the fight, so if Zervan stabs it, Alistar stabs it, and then Leliana gets the killing blow with her stab, then they all get an equal cut of the xp between them. But what about me. I don't do damage really, only occasionally, I focus more on healing, which means most of these mobs I am not even touching, so do I still get a cut? Else I'm going to respec and go primal or something

Don't worry, you'll get xp as well.

Only Exp problems were caused by pets and animal form shapeshifters.

That Exp is what everyone gets.

Xp is shared almost equally between the party - actually, everyone else always gets 2 less xp than the character who struck the killing blow. E.g Alistair kills a Hurlock, gets 42xp, everyone else gets 40xp. Also, you don't gain any xp for kills by non-party allies, so pay more attention in the Korcari Wilds for example. as you will gain xp only for kills by yourself and Alistair, not Jory and the other fella.

+ being a healer is great, because that way you wont have to force yourself of risking any type of dps characters for a range Mage, since you are already one. But, its always good to have another mage to do more damage since you are once again a healer, not a person who deals much damage points.

Work best if your also a Buffer and debuffer and/or crowd control.
