Quoted from the Wiki (Circle Quest):
The last room on the third floor holds the strongest set of enemies. Demons, Abominations, a giant statue of a warrior holding a shield, and three Tranquils standing in their midst. Once you enter the room, everything except the statue and the Tranquils attack. Each Tranquil eventually turns into an enemy and will join the attack. Their transformation stops when the Abomination dies.
I remembered going into this room and seeing the tranquil change into abominations. But then it struck me, aren't tranquils immume to possession like this? Isn't that the whole point of making someone tranquil to begin with? Now I'm trying to read through codex's and such to figure out how these three tranquil get changed. It kinda blows a big hole in the whole tranquil theory.
Also from the Wiki about the tranquil:
Those mages who are too weak of will to resist demonic possession or appear to be dangerous are forced (or willingly volunteer) to go through the Rite of Tranquility, which involves the use of a magical brand made of lyrium to cut off a mage's connection to the Fade: they can no longer dream. As a side effect, their emotional center is utterly removed. One or both of these things make it so that demons can no longer possess them (it's not certain which). In the mind of one of the tranquils, there is no passion. They keep to themselves, and, if asked directly, will readily agree that having the opportunity to live out a peaceful and useful existence is far preferable when compared to what their alternatives would have been.
ps - Generally I will end up saving one, though once I did save two of them.

Take the wiki (and even Codex entries) with a grain of salt.
I strongly suspect that the line about Tranquil being immune to possession is more in reference to them not attracting demons like mages do, due to their link to the Fade being severed (it's a mage's link to the Fade that makes them 'stand out' to demons). As Tranquil do not, I think, dream, or at the least are on the same level as mundane elves/humans or even dwarves when they sleep, they are not at risk of being targetted by demons while at rest.
However, mundanes (non-mages) can be possessed. It's not common, but it can happen. IMO there is no reason to assume Tranquil cannot be possessed just because they are not mages, even if they have no 'passion' or emotion, as possession can be forced. There is also a theory thanks to DA2 that spirits/demons might be able to restore a Formari's link to the Fade if a possession took place.

I think this is exception that proves the rule, or something like that. Dwarves can be forced into the Fade, so even the Tranquil can be forced into possession.

If you play DA2 there's a whole quest where it reveals that anyone (templars included) can become an abomination if forced by blood magic.

The Tranquil aren't actually transforming into abominations. The demons — actually shades — are feeding on them, which allows them to manifest and attack you.
You can actually save one or two of those Tranquil if you slay the Boss Abomination quickly enough. I suspect it cast the spell that's holding them in place.

Huh... I never knew that was even possible! I always killed the Boss Abomination in that room quickly enough that the Tranquil never turned.
