I'm not sure which to make my primary weapon. Just did Samara's recruitment, and I keep swapping out the locust and the tempest....

I love the clip size of the tempest natrually..but I feel like I can aim better with the locust... and I have 3/5 or 4/5 of the ammo upgrades

you mean the damage upgrades - there's only one ammo increase for the SMG, and you only get that after you get 3 damage upgrades.

Yeah the Tempest is inaccurate but great against shields. If you pick the Assault Rifle Training on the Collector Ship, the Tempest could work great at short range to back the Mattock/Vindicator.

If you like to sit back in cover and cast mid-to-long range, the Locust is your best bet. The Tempest a beast at short range and probably better than the Locust on Geth misions when paired with Zaeed's Squad Disruptor Ammo.

Depends on what range you like to play from. The locust is much more accurate but I do find the clip size slightly small. The tempest is deadly up close but meh from range. If you take a shotgun on the collector ship then the locust would be the best smg for variety. Similairly if you go for assault rifle training you'll find more use for the tempest at close range. Ultimately go for the gun you enjoy using and don't worry too much about stats.

The Locust is very accurate weapon with negligible recoil.
The Tempest fires in 5 round bursts with high recoil. If you hold or quickly pulse the Tempest, it becomes a very inaccurate weapon.

What is (or will be) your bonus weapon?

If you took Assault rifle training (so you can use the Vindicator or Mattock) or Sniper rifle training, then I recommend using the Tempest since you have another highly-accurate weapon at your disposal.

If you took shotgun training, then I recommend using the Locust since it's more accurate than most of the shotguns and can be used at farther distances. If you use the Geth Plasma Shotgun--which is a highly-accurate shotgun--then I recommend the Tempest.

Tempest if you know you will be in close with it all the time (ie: you have no shotgun or Mattock, but still want/need to go CQC). This gun has a great RoF and a huge clip; both are great for fighting in close. Try to have an ammo power active on this gun, since its base attack is only good against shields/barriers. Does less damage than the Shuriken, but is easier to use and doesn't require such frequent reloads.

Locust if you A) Don't know what you will be facing B) Need a gun that's pretty much good for any range (ie: assault rifle substitute). This gun has very good accuracy, range and is equally effective on armor/shields/barriers. On the downside, it's clip size isn't great and its RoF is slow, so you're at a bit of a disadvantage up close, compared to other SMGs. The Locust is basically just an assault rifle substitute taking an SMG slot.

Yeah I'm using the locust more....it feels more accurate I'm on the collector ship right now and am still on that mattock vs. viper problem

I love the mattock, it kills things quickly... but I love sniping and adept is a caster class

Remember about the annoying sniper zoom thing when casting. It pretty much ruins taking sniper training on a caster class for me.

The Locust is, IMO, the superior caster(/overall) SMG. It has range and it STILL works up close as well.

The other two are still pretty good, but by using them you are missing out on the versatility offered by the Locust. There's also the fun factor of course, and I can't tell you what to like.

Depends on how you use your SMG.
The shuriken is good for stripping mooks quickly so you can rain hell with your powers.
The tempest is good for killing bosses/minibosses. An example would be CC'ing harbie with the drone or singularity and strip his barrier.
The locust is great all-around but I HATE the sound.

It's not as bad on certain engineer builds b/c of the greater number of insta-hit powers available to them... Sniper Adepts are harder to play b/c biotic projectiles move so dam slow, and also their powers set isn't as focused on direct damage.

I like to spam incinerate and cryoblast on my engineer so the zoom thing is definately an issue. I hope they speed up the travel time of these in me3.

I remember casting incinerate with my infiltrator before the forums converted me to shotguns. It is definitely an issue. It can it used to cast abilities on enemies you can't target
