Fact is that mechanically they did move away from the traditional rpg mechanics AND their depth in favor of a simpler, more streamlined experience. I hardly used the skills, so I found micro managing the characters to be tedious.
Then I want less skills, like ME2.
less skills is less depth especially if the skills are as varied as ME1's
less depth = leaning toward a shooter
some (a lot of) people dislike that especially people who want a deeper game than say Halo or GoW
