According to the article that the release date came from...

"Pony head writer Meghan McCarthy tells EW that season 3 will focus on main pony Twilight Sparkle as she advances in her magical studies: “She’s been in Ponyville for awhile now, and so her journey is going a little bit further,” McCarthy says."

And she was always the main protagonist, they probably just want to flesh her out a bit more.

So she is going to leave the other 5 behind (for the most part)? That's what it sounds like.

AFAIK, she's "denied" because it was one of the things the Hub wanted since the beginning, not because it wasn't on her mind.

Hasbro "left behind" older characters with Transformers.   Why not suspect Season 3 will be something similar?

[Only the characters were killed and not left behind.] I say Rarity, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash will be left in Ponyville and largely be stuck with cameos, as the older characters cannot be conveniently killed off to make space for new toy lines due to the nature of this franchise.

Edit: I keep getting Hasbro and Namco mixed up.

Thanks for the confirmation - odd that the season release is on the same day of my brother's bachelor party. Everybody wins on the 10th, apparently.

As far as Twilight taking a bigger role, here's how I see it - of the Mane 6, she's always been the person most focused on major/minor conflicts within Equestria. It's logical that if we're heading into a more serious narrative, she'd be playing top pony.

(BUY SOME SPOILERS, ALBEIT MINOR ONES)When I saw the first 2 episodes, I'd figured the entire season was revolved around dealing with Nightmare Moon in a LOTR-esque running around the world scenario. Then she just gets it in episode 2. I was a bit dissapointed.

Makes sense to me, I mean think about it, why would Princess Celestia send her brightest student to research friendship of all things?  My theory is that outside of Ponyville, other pony settlements are facing times of severe social unrest, and Princess Celestia is using Twilight's research on the magic of friendship to plan a large scale social engineering project.
