1.) WHY?

The only one more idiotic than Twilight is Pinkie Pie. Why promote Stupid McStupidson? Oh, look, her brother is royalty and just got laid married. So? Based on the trivial nature of her assignment, there must be no at least some number of royalty to go around. 

2.) Disruption of balance

The Mane 6 consist of two stallions,Applejack and Pinkie Pie; two pegasuses (Pegasi?), Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash; and two unicorns, Twilight Sparkle and Rarity.

So, If we "promote" one to Alicorn, it just screws everything up. Will she no longer be affiliated with the Mane 6 as often (this is what I suspect tbh)? How does it fit in to her group? 

3.) How does this fit in to what is established?

I would have thought that all the ponies were "born that way." Now we can suddenly change their type? Is this going to turn into My Little Micheal Jackson where we continously graft the ponies with new parts or shapes?

4.) Why her and not Shining Armor?

Shining Armor is WAAAY more significant than her atm. She's just some bookish nerd camping out in Nowhereville learning things about friendship aka observing how crazy she and everyone else is. Why not give Shining Armor wings instead? He's the one in a position of significane. Cadence has wings. Shining Armor's gonna get left out.

I'm going to ignore all sentences but the last.

If you watched the show, you'd know that not only Twilight is Celestia's personal protégé since she earned her Mark (that'd be what... equivalent to 12 years-old?), but that Celestia has remarked on how much raw magic potential she has. Also, Twi was supposed to be the main protagonist from back when the show's creators where filled with more adventure-type ideas. Since Hasbro wanted lighter, Aesop-filled episodes without an arc, they pulled her back. This also explains why Twilight is the standard character that interacts with the Aesop-targeted pony, in a way. She only has three episodes with Aesops that really seem connected to her character (Feeling Pinkie Keen, Lesson Zero, It's About Time).

Hints of her being leading material are also scattered throughout the series: not only she's the by-default wiser of the Mane 6, every Twilight episode except the mentioned above has hints of traits well-suited for leaders. Winter Wrap Up. The Ticket Master. Return of Harmony...

The answer is really simple. They are starting to change the series' structure. Everything points towards the adventure-type structure with story arcs as opposed to watch-in-any-order everyday Aesops. I'm not saying every episode will feature a quest to save a civilization, only that they can't keep writing the kinds of episodes they usually do, because they eventually will portray something very similar to what has already been analyzed for a given character. Example: Lesson Zero and It's About Time have key differences, but they both make use of Twi's "perfectionist-nerd-anxiety" to get the plot going.

I too think it would be a dangerous move, but done right, and hey, they managed to pull off a royal wedding between two characters that weren't even introduced before, it would open up lots of possibilities, refresh the series, and make it more intricate.

First = Magic. Ascension. Et cetera (seriously, I can't stop thinking about Twilight Archons when I discuss this crazy theory)

As for lore regarding races, the "born that way" explanations fits in ONLY with the "standard" pony races. Alicorns are a complete mystery, thus the tons of speculation over Cadence. She may have been born an alicorn, but that doesn't discount the possibility that the first alicorns were ascended ponies. Given how Celestia has her own Charles Xavier school (seriously, it's called Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns), her tutoring of Twilight, and her mentions of Twi being ready for "the next level", well, let's just say they are excellent foreshadowing.

But even better than that is the symbolism. Sun, Moon, Twilight. Their Marks on the background during the S3E1 teaser. The representation of Twilight in that Canterlot Sphere Thingy.

Plus, there's the Alicorn Twilight Convention Poster...

Except, as proven by 1), he's not more significant, and Twi's not "just some bookish nerd".


Before someone comes with the Mary Sue Overpowered Godlike Alicorn argument, remember that Luna is definitely NOT a Mary Sue.
