It might just be some kind of a temporary thing, like when discord removed their horns and wings, but they can't establish a canon method for normal ponies to permanently turn into alicorns, that's fanfic territory!

Shining Armour's power is clearly much more powerful (Twilight needs all of the Mane Six, while Shining just needs help from Cadence alone)

 
I'm baffled as to why would that be the case. Really. Shining has a big bubble spell. That's it. Comparing the "Power of Love" (I still hate that plot device even if I overall loved the episode) with the Elements of Harmony is really Apples to Oranges. You can't just compare the number of ponies involved and call it a day. Cadence only served as a badass amplifier: Shining Armor is limited to defensive spells, and as seen in the newspaper episode (lazy to search for name), Twilight can easily copy that.

and it doesn't make sense story-wise. I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Volus Warlord's earlier post.

Well, duh it doesn't make sense story-wise. Any big change in a show should be made gradually. It's almost like you're implying that I implied it's going to happen in this initial two-parter season premiere.

Just for the record, despite what the wording on my first post on the subject have implied, I do not believe it's really really probable that Twi's changing to an Alicorn. (even though I think they can pull it off, and would like it)

I'm merely pointing out that it's a possibility. Especially considering the recent symbolism (also dat poster). If you haven't watched the S3E1 preview you wouldn't know.

You make it sound as if Celestia's got a Alicorninator 3000 on her personal chambers.

Besides, Cutie Mark Chronicles makes it clear that Twi isn't exactly a normal pony (I know you meant "standard race" but play along)
