Eh..I didn't like this episode either. Seems like it really is just for kids now. Somethings missing.

Where do I begin...

By all means, begin. Explain what I'm missing, why it seems the other seasons bridged the gap between 'kids' show and plenty of nods to adults, along with clever writing. I don't follow the fandom. So maybe I'm missing something.

It did feel like a season 1 episode for me, what with all the Mane 6 having their part to play and not just being there for the sake of being there.
Try your hand at this. Apparently I'm Cloud Breeze the Manly Salesman, and I'm destined to overthrow Canterlot.

I am Shining Bloom the Shy Librarian, destined to write a letter to a tree.

Go back all the way to the first half of S1. You don't even have to go all the way to the pilot (which we all agree was kind of different). How many 'adult nods' do those have?

I honestly think it's a case of not having episodes for months and having expectations slightly skewed by that. I mean, most "adult nods" people mention tend to be hidden references like Metal Gear Twilight Sparkle or somesuch. And if having Clone!Pinkie make a G3 face doesn't satisfy that kind of reference, what could?

In case you're not talking about references... Pony Slavery. Door of Worst Fears. Dark Magic.

To me, S3 is just as MLP as the other two seasons were, just less girly, better animated, and very possibly being more magic-influenced. These first three episodes had magic as an important part, and 5 is called "Magic Duel"

Fluttershy will be so happy that she received a letter. Not so when she learns her books are overdue to return.

Assuming we ever meet face to face our conversation will consist of polite apologies and mumbled sentences you have to strain to hear.

You'd have to isolate the area to avoid death by adorableness.

aww, she's just mad because Luna is plotting to force her to balance Equestria's budget after she passes all her tests. That book with the stars on it was Equestria's omnibus bill.

I'm having trouble trusting that in the end they had the real Pinkie. The seeds of uncertainty have been planted.

What I thought was more interesting is, if that spell of hers that she used to banish the clones back to the pool can be used to banish real ponies too, does it only work on ponies who have been exposed to the pool?  For the sake of argument, could she use it to trap Trixie or the Flim Flam brothers in the pool?

"Excuse me, this Pinkie Pie is defective. I would like a refund."

Okay, so I wound up enjoying that one more than I thought I would. I laughed pretty hard at the pool dive and watching paint dry, and associated scenes thereof.

Honestly, though, I think my biggest takeways were still 1) DARING DO! and 2) FANCY PANTS AND TANK and 3) SOPHISTICATED BEAR. Yeah, I'm a killjoy. Yeah, I suck like that.

Animation was great as usual, though. Seems like the noticeable jump in quality that A Canterlot Wedding had - which was a jump over Season 2, itself already a noticeable improvement over Season 1 - has carried over into not just the premier, but the rest of Season 3. Perhaps the condensed season is helping with that.

Twilight's still evidently got limits to her power. But they seem to be making a point of her displaying new abilities every episode.

Pinkie delivered a biology lesson on runaway exponential growth.

I like how the writers seem to have backed off on Dash being "COOLNESS. AWESOMNESS. RADICALNESS." 24/7. Meghan (and M.A. Larson and Cindy Morrow) seems to have a good grasp of that so her promotion to story editor can only have helped on that front.

Dave Polsky gets his first writing credit since Over A Barrel. Welcome back.

As Pinkie episodes go, I liked it more than A Friend In Deed, but not as much as Baby Cakes.

Still, as I've said before, there are exactly three things I remember from AFID - Pinkie's literal welcome wagon, the felt sequence, and TWILIGHT AND RAINBOW READING IN THE LIBRARY HO SH*T WE GOT SOME CONTINUITY ALL UP IN THIS B*TCH.

So this one is already an improvement over that.

You liked Baby Cakes? Huh. Then I guess I'm the only one that strikes out points immediately at the mention of babies as a centerpiece of an episode.

People mentioned how the Mane 6 get temporarily Flanderized during season openers/closers. I think The Crystal Empire was no different.

In related news, predicted MLP doomsday scenarios turn out to be false.

Was there ever any doubt? ;)

Man, I have not said a word about the Pinkie Swarm.

This kind of episode was bound to happen eventually, and I'm glad they did it the way they did.
Poor Andrea, so much voice work, talking to herself.

No, I struck points off too, but the twins - and how Pinkie interacted with them - won me over over the course of the episode. Especially flour-covered Charlie Sheen Pie, and the Poltergeist-esque sequence at the end.

Oh, and Twilight showing up to help and unintentionally insulting Pinkie. <3
