I was expecting an "okay" episode, but it turned out to be really great. Great Pinkie moments (at one point reminding me of Party of One), inventive training for the Wonderbolts, return of the Hurricane Fluttershy pegasi (all of them, in fact), and a surprisingly not-totally-obvious conflict/ending.

Also, notice how this is the second out of three mane character-focused episodes to put them against negative Flanderizations of themselves, the other being Too Many Pinkie Pies. I guess that even Magic Duel could fit in, so that's 3 out of 3. I like this pattern, as it's a good means to keep the character development rolling without resorting to what S1/S2 did - pitting them against their clear weaknesses.

Twilight trying to be the best magic student she can, the constant allusions of "going too far" in this season, Trixie becoming corrupted, the introduction and first use of dark magic by Twi, along with Twilight's tendency to become desperate and be put in charge of great responsibilites, all of this leads credence to my suspicions that she might get corrupted herself during the S3 finale (remember the "abandoned ponyville" shots?)

So I watched the leaked episode and I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Pinkie was really OCD in this one it was hilarious, I was almost expecting Pinkamena to show up. The Wonderbolt Academy was epic, it really had that proud airforce feel to it(especially considering what Spitfire was wearing and the whole moral to the story) Reminded me of Stargate a little,hehe.Also, Roid Rage returns in this one YEAAAAAAAAAA!

It's funny how those who haven't seen the episode yet seem to be expecting this to be the worst episode so far because the writer for this episode is Merriweather(sp?) Williams, the writer for Mare-Do-Well while completely ignorig other praised episodes she did after that like Hearth's Warming Eve and Putting your Hoof Down.

Yup. Though Mare Do Well really is the shows' worst.

Also, you almost got the name right. No "a" in Merriwether.

Spiderses is the only fanfic on Equestria Daily to get the Godlike tag.

EDIT Wow, a fair amount of people on Equestria Daily now are really ripping into Merriwether, like its impossible for her to do right by them. Really, Mysterious Mare Do-Well was a bad episode yeah, but all the ones I can think of that she's done since has improved on it. Also, people having major issues about Spitfires voice, and also her personality, acting like she had a true canon personality in the first plac, what with her two to three lines back in season 1 (don't think she even spoke in season 2). God I hate it when people prefer fanon/headcanon to canon to the point where they become completely blind to the truth. Also want to know the real gem? Apparently that's still the same VA as the original Spitfire.

Sorry for my rant.

it kinda seems un**?deserved here, Personally i've liked all the things hasbro has done with most of the fannon characters they've made canon, except when they reneged on derpy in episode 16 of season 2 but that is another issue entirely, spitfire Is a pony we just have not seen enough of to really get a feel for the personality or for peopel to really have a cemented idea of who she is yet in my honest opinion. sure if they made an episode with DJ Pon3 B34ts being the focus it would be nice to see her behave kinda like the way nowacking(for those of you who follow that youtuber) But i wouldn't destroy the writer the way they are, at least from the sounds of it it's pretty bad, if they didn't follow that way. It is after all hasbros show and hasbros characters it's not like they have no right to do the characters as they see fit.

Edit: Holy Crap i forgot an un and let it go forever... Sorry Folks I meant Undeserved*  it's fixed now... 2 or 3 days after the fact.

EDIT EDIT: I'm not sure if i was saying the rant was deserved or the the comments you were ranting about were undeserved anymore so to clarify the comments were underserved the rant was deserved. Ok im just gonna leave it like that.

I don't see a problem with the episode, what are the complaints other than Spitfire being not exactly what different people expect her to be? Because I think she's great in this episode considering she is not in front of a crowd like in the Best Night Ever and Hurricane Fluttershy. She's being a genuine Drill Sergeant (even though that jacket says otherwise). And it's great that she shows competence at the end too.

By the way, I have a feeling Lightning Dust is going to have a fan following like Gilda and ,to a much lesser extent, Trixie

Apparently people felt the episode was just bland overall, and then there are those who seem to hate it just for the fact that Merriwether wrote it, without giving reasons why. Some think Lightning Dust is Gilda 2.0, the Pinkie parts felt forced, no Soarin and the rest of the Mane cast felt shoehorned in. Also some losing interest in the show merely because Derpy hasn't been in recent episodes.

Personally though, I really liked it.

Personally, I liked the new episode(just watched it).

I'm sure Spitfire was acting that way because hello, its like a military academy.

But anyway, I liked everything from this episode. Pinkie over-leveling to 11, Rainbow Dash showing why she's the Element of Loyalty, the Mane Six still having a role(however minor) and Applejack being the lead out of the rest of the Mane Six in this episode.
