So I've pinned down what I don't like about the episode:

-CGI by itself is not a problem. The way the Timberwolves got seemingly low-res textures and bad animation that constantly contrasted with the show's usual SuperSmoothiness is.
-Life debt thing is really tired.

I'm really sad about this "Spike is a retard" thing because other than that the episode had plenty of great moments. It's just that I can't let go such an important detail.

I'd give this a 6.5

The episode was ok tbh. I just wish they brought back the Celestia letters that made me love the show so much. So far theirs only been like what, 2 letters to our favourite equine goddess of the sun?

Hypotheticals:

What if Rainbow Dash meant the 20% Cooler remark not in how it looked, but because she thought it was too warm or didn't breathe enough?

Should there be an episode or more on...
A. the Mane 6 learning to use the Elements in a more mundane fashion, A.K.A. not used to defeat an enemy or cause massive spells?

B. One or two letters to Luna because Celestia is off somewhere(possibly later episode for reason she was gone). This assumes letters are more predominant than they are now?

In 3rd Season possibly, but series overall, not quite, now Rainbow Dash needs her own song however.
Rarity's the better candidate for 3rd Season, would need a chart of how often an episode centers around a certain character and airtime associated to say for the series.

Did Celestia ever tell Spike to send letters? Because he's the one who learned something.

Yeah, but at least it was funny. Unlike Mare Do Well, which featured both completely OOC behavior and was devoid of humor past the first five minutes.

I thought the middle section with all of spike's attempts to complete the dragon code went on for too long, but overall the episode went fair enough. The Timber Wolves have a great look - I think it was tastefully done. It didn't look superimposed or forced into the scene. Didn't look low rez from what I saw. The last major scene with the timber wolves made me simultaneously lol and facepalm.

I slightly agree with the dialogue issues - some of that just isn't up to par with what I usually see with MLP. It was more memorable than the last applejack episode(besides the fwitter meme), but my mind has yet to be blown this season.

It was. But that's what 6.5 is in my book. "Okay", as opposed to a 7 "Good", an 8 "Great!" or a 9 "AWESOME!"

Wow wow wow, calm down. I think I prefer what they are doing right now: making letters only if the plot ends up giving a general, obvious aesop, and if they still have time left. Imagine how much more cramped would this episode have felt with a letter sequence? Besides, it's not like letters to Celestia guaranteed her appearance. We'll get plenty of her during Keep Calm And Flutter On and the season finale.

Dialogue-wise or overall? I think Sleepless in Ponyville was pretty fricking rad, you know (overall, not the dialogue).

Because here he can't make anything. Like REALLY ANYTHING. Remember how he could cook as implied during the beginning of Dragon Quest? Now he can't. Remember how he used to be a good assistant? Now he destroys everything he touches. Remember how he jumped in against Diamond Dogs and even held them off? Pfff, forget it.

If I had to put this in 4chan language, I'd say Spike went from the (understandably, because baby dragon) Beta male of the group to the Spaghetti Master Alzheimer's Claws Betalord Spike The Fourth. Just. For. The. Plot.

I'm aware that characters often get temporarily Flanderized so their flaws can be more easily exposed and the episode can get a point across quickly, but they didn't need to do it like this in this episode, and Williams apparently didn't get the "quickly" part of the memo.
