I saw that the other day when Baron posted it. Say, what do you all think of the quality of season three so far? Save for some hiccups I quite enjoyed it, though not as much as I did season 2. It's just that there are more and more people popping up lately doomsaying that season 3 is the a sign that FiM is dying, and then there's the whole pandering thing.

Apparently I'm too slow to the draw on the new episodes. Drat.
Season 1 had hiccups too. Hiccups large enough that I stopped watching altogether after the first few episodes. However, I think there was better reasoning for that, as they were still trying to get a hold on the show's identity.
Beginning of the End? A bit early to tell, but I think they still have ample opportunity to get back to the good stuff. It's my least favorite season so far, but I'd be surprised if MLP simply died off in quality so early in its' life span.

I just think Season 3 as a whole feels rushed, not in the "we were lazy now we have to hurry some random cr@p" sense, but rather as if they had to stuff 26 episodes in 13. Otherwise, it had fewer, more forgivable, even if maligned, mistakes. Sombra and Spike's OOC are the only ones I can think about.
I honestly believe Season 3 would have been by far the better one if it had 26 episodes. As it stands, it doesn't lose to S2, but it can't exactly win either because it's got no A Canterlot Wedding-tier episode...

I mean, S2 had Baby Cakes, Mare-Do-Well, The Cutie Pox and Dragon Quest. They were all pretty meh (MDW was awful), even if some had their moments (Dragon Quest). Even A Friend In Deed wasn't that good, it just saves itself from being placed in the mediocrity list because Smile Smile Smile is just too damn good.
What are the most hated episodes this season? Spike At Your Service? Easily beats them all. Crystal Empire? Either part beats them too.

Season 2 is the winner by far with all its top notch Rarity episodes and A Canterlot Wedding.
Season 3 so far is good, but not notable or memorable to me.

Well I maintain that S2 suffered from too much mediocre episodes to slide unpunished, even if had an impressive amount of Sonic Rainboom-tier episodes such as Sisterhooves Social and Hurricane Fluttershy.
It's not like S3 didn't have any of those, either. Sleepless in Ponyville, anyone?

Well I'd have to watch the episode one more time to be sure, but I can say it certainly had continuity going for it, referencing Secret to My Excess, Dragon Quest, and having one or two-episode characters reappear.

I liked today's episode. Just watched it. Spike was a chache, and he paid for it. Literally.

I liked that in 5 seconds they justified why Pee Wee never appeared after Dragon Quest AND fixed the "uuuh, did Spike just kidnap a Phoenix for himself?" thing people were talking about when the episode aired.

There are always doomsayers. There were plenty of people who reviled Season 2 while it was airing as not as good as Season 1 and featuring too much panda rings, now it's been held up as the greatest thing ever that Season 3 is a pile of crap compared to.
Bioware games go through this too. People complained that NWN wasn't Baldur's Gate II, people complained that Jade Empire wasn't KotOR, and my personal favorite, ME2 is now held up as a paragon of storytelling and design when not one year ago people were complaining that it wasn't an RPG and Bioware had to basically remake ME1 in order for ME3 to be good.
tl;dr
Everything that ever existed is subject to "They Changed It, Now It Sucks". Don't let it get to you.

A Spike episode that was pretty damn good? Stop the presses! I really enjoyed the episode myself and I know what you mean by continuity Gravy. Seeing Screwloose and Nurse Redheart and the latter taking a glance at the former when Winona runs past them barking, and Mac and Cheerilee walking together are just two examples. Angel had some great characterisation too and well, all the pets were great as were the CMC. Corey Powell has written only two episodes thus far and both have been great. Hopefully she keeps that track record going.
EDIT
Yeah I get you Baron, it's just sometimes I end up seeing something like when people say Magic Duel was pure fanservice/pandering ignoring the fact that the story concept was pitched as far back as January 2011. It's things like that which tend to irk me. At then end of the day though people need to realise it's still just a kids cartoon, plus the are still first and foremost their target audience, not us. Thus they need to stop taking it so ridiculously seriously.

I did see the episode just now, and yeah - that turned out a lot better than I'd expected. The writing's on the nose, it's more of a running-around-ponyville deal as opposed to Baby Cakes, and they hammer in the lesson very well as it plays out.
Looking good, ponies. Looking good.

As for these pandas, I suppose no one complaining about them has thought that maybe the writers just wanted to put in there for their own entertainment?
To be honest, I missed half the continuity in the episode when I made that comment, all of them being the ones you mentioned. This is possibly the best Spike-centered episode yet. Pets? CMC?

This is evidence of the Bronies' downfall, and it can be attributed to your clopping. You see, your clopitude is a disease that is not only degrading to others, but degrading to yourself.
Why? You would not know a great episode if you saw one because you are too busy looking for images and quotes that could be tailored into some abomination. Your perverse outlook is ruining any enjoyment you could find in a show intended for preteen girls.
So, all the episodes from here on out will seem subpar to you, as they (theoritically) do not contain the obscenities that you so desire.

Observations thus far:
Owlysious and Angel are inherently funny. They've definitely put a lot of effort into animating the pets for this one.
Rainbow and Tank are so cute together.
Opal's head boop of Tank was also funny.
