A brony is an adult fan of the My Little Pony reboot called MLP: Friendship is Magic that started airing on the Hub in late 2010. The reboot's creator, Lauren Faust (known for working on PowerPuff Girls, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends and The Iron Giant) had a goal to make the reboot appeal to not only little girls, but also boys and adults. And well, the huge fan following that spawned from it clearly shows that she succeeded admirably. The characters are great and 3-dimensional, poseessing actual character development as the show progresses, the animation is top quality, there are mods and references to things that most kids simply won't get, the voice work is fantastic and a bunch of other reasons on why a huge Internet subculture spawned around this show.

As for the fanbase itself, they're easily the biggest, most active and creative fanbase I've ever been a part of. Every day art, music, fan animations and fanfics are pumped out, as well as a slew of fan games being developed. Also, I daresay we interact more and have a better relationship with the show staff and VA's than we BW fans and BW themselves do.

Uh, also, this.

It's not that they'll "lose the trademark" or whatever silliness gets thrown around. But unfortunately, not prosecuting FiM upon being forced to acknowledge their existence would hurt their ability to seek damages when suing bootleg pony manufactures in China. 

I'm still dissappointed that they weren't able to come to a licensing agreement, but what can you do? 

I have heard tale that Luaren is now officially on board with mane6 though >.> granted this tale was spun to me by the escapist >.>

Yeah, Faust is indeed on the Mane6 devteam after Hasbro shut down Fighting is Magic, in order to create new original character designs so they can continue working on the game.

If you ever do decide to see what all the fuss is about, all the episodes are on Youtube. It's best to watch from the season 1 pilot and go in order from there though, as there are instances of continuity throughout. The first two episodes aren't the best to judge on though as their purpose is mainly to introduce the setting and the main 6 characters.

Hey lol Twilight Sparkle is OCD… Season 3 episode 9 Twilight is reading her books and AppleJack trying to get Twilights attention breaks her concentration by moving one of three inkwells on a writing desk less than an inch. First thing Twilight does is go over to the writing desk and move the inkwell back an inch.

So was on a business trip, seven hour ride home! I decided I'd give an episode a try, as I had several hours to kill... As quickly as the first episode began the thrall began to set in! I was a ways into the first season thinking what a sweet saddlebag Twilight Sparkle had…

When I realized holy crap what the heck am I doing?! I was only supposed to watch one episode! There is only one clear answer Indoctrination. These really are REAPER PONY DOOMSDAY DEVICES!!

CMC episodes are always a bit awkward. You tend to spend an inordinate amount of time looking at underage pony plot.
