Technically it's what a unicorn's horn is supposedly made of. However, in the show an alicorn has recently been canonized as the proper name for the type of pony the princesses are.

Some servents of the Great Other are refusing to recognize Her Grace Princess Twilight Sparkle as one of them, but pay them no mind. Celestia-R'hllor shall burn them all in the end.
