That would be a Cutie Mark. This mark is usually seen as a illustration of who you are and what you will become.

i.e. Pinkie Pie

She has three ballons as a cutie mark, she likes throwing parties and generally thinking differently than anything else with a brain.
i.e. Luna

She controls the movement of the Moon and the tides, therefore I'm sure you know what's on her flank
(little bit of fun fact about Luna, Recon loves seeing 'er, I do too but not in the same way as he.)
