Maybe there are an infinite number of twilight sparkles, all of whom are not the real one, who died during her magical overload in which allowed the element of magic to possess her body and use it as it's own.

Twilight sparkle, the real one, was than banished into the multiverses source code, but went mad from the massive amounts of different lives and knowledge from the multiverses awareness. She went off the deep end, her old identity shattered as she found an overwhelming need to distance herself from her persona as twilight sparkle, so she could handle knowing everything about all twilight sparkles in all of reality and every probability of them.

She broke off her horn, more from an accident than anything else, but found she could still use magic. She looked for an opportunity to return, and found it by taking on a new persona, a new person, and altering the source code of reality to allow her to create an entirely new life for herself. The process left her drained, her physical body unstable, and so she formed a new one based on the first thing she saw, a pink, fluffy, stuffed animal inside the shared bedroom of two other fillies, both of whom lived on a rock farm with their father and mother. Her form was young, like the other fillies, and the trauma of becoming a pink earth pony in appearnce made her temporarily forget everything of her old life. Until she saw a massive burst of energy formed from an event she knew as a sonic rainboom thanks to her multiverse knowledge. Her memories returned, as did her madness induced mania, and so was born, pinkie pie.

And that's why madness and free time are a dangerous thing to combine with drinking and online posting.
