Not sure if it's worth staying up for this episode - the scene seems like it's trying too hard to get the point across. Yeah, it's only 30 seconds of 22 minutes, but the episode concept was never really pulling me in the first place. Edit: I'm gonna wait until tomorrow night to watch it.

Unicorn yes, but magic isn't really a great specialty of hers. If it were Twi and Applejack, that's a different story.

Got some terrifying news... after this episode, we'll be halfway done with the season. It seems just like yesterday that we were watching Pinkie Pie dream about frosting, and canes... the canes!

Apple Horse and Fashion Horse really hurt my brain this episode.

I'd file the episode in the 7.5-8 range.

You can see just about where the story's going, but they do have some good laugh-out-loud moments. Some of that stuff with Rarity using AJ's accent was a bit painful to watch. I really don't have much else to say on this one. It's a filler episode, and it was alright.

If it was Season 3, the season would be over. No complaints.

Yeah. Waiting 9 months after 13 episodes was not a pleasure. It's gotten a lot better in quality over time, too. From my perspective, a decent episode from S4 would be an above average episode in S1. The game has changed dramatically over the last 4 years, and a lot of that's thanks to the writing team building a greater sense of drama.

Really.

Over time, the series has evolved into something much greater than when it started. The first season was fun-but-flawed: Many of the episodes were a simple premise(Applejack works too hard, Pinkie Defies Logic and Twi ain't happy with it) which was played out with random humor filled in between. It was hard to enjoy the episodes when you can see exactly where it's going. In many cases, certain scenes were fantastic, but the episodes themselves weren't that memorable(Bridle Gossip's Evil Enchantress and the Flutterguy rendition).

Honestly, the first 2 episodes threw me off the fandom for about 3 weeks before giving it a second chance. It came off as a glorified introduction to the Mane 6 and Nightmare Moon. Her motive didn't make a great deal of sense(though I believe this was clarified in an MLP comic). I'll admit she had badass factor. It's still by leaps and bounds, the weakest of the 2-parters. The first season did have slight hints of more drama-centric, emotional content from Sonic Rainboom but wasn't fully fleshed out.

And then Season 2 changed everything. The Return of Harmony took the Mwa-Ha-Ha-ing of Nightmare Moon and threw us for the loop with a villain that people could relate to a bit more. He falls somewhere into the Magnificent Bastard Trope, but it's more impressive how the episode's drama itself played out. A bit like Sheogorath or Kefka-Lite. There are few things more disturbing that seeing your friends turn on you, especially all at once. Transformed into the opposite of their own selves, the audience is holding onto their seats to see how it plays out.

Lesson Zero took the rules established by the previous season, and through them out the damned door. It was an episode that brought Twi's one flaw to the forefront, and outright removed the requirement for lessons each week(in the interests of episode variety?). It was slighty out of character for the sake of making the episode work, but it worked in their favor, as opposed to how Simple Ways turned out. Canterlot Wedding built up the momentum by providing a relatively secret villain instead of Celestia spouting out exposition.

Oversized Post Intermission

Season 3 added a new setting, 2 episodes that aligned chronologically backwards, and the visual innuendo, which has grown extraordinarily popular in Season 4.

Season 4 is throwing out all the big guns: Long Term Story Arcs, Twists that still don't make full sense to me, and a level of emotional resonance(FttF/RtM) that I yet to see from televised. cartoons.

So yes. Really. XD

They'll probably save Twi's for last, and I'm guessing the ancient castle is going to be involved. It may very well be the last inevitable 2-parter that she finds it. If it ends the way Sonic Adventure 2 Did with like them fighting a giant monster in space with the 6 Emeralds of Harmony, that'd be pretty badass.
