The premise was good and made a LOT of sense for Applejack's character. Speaking of character, everyone's was top notch here too, so extra points for that; it is fitting that family - more specifically a family member's happiness - would be one the few things that could break AJ's "100% honest 100%(ish) of the time" policy.

And I do agree with you on that, it worked a great deal better on that side than Somepony To Watch Over Me did. At least from my perspective, it was just too easy to see where it was going, and it eventually lost my interest. It's not that there's anything inherently "wrong" with the episode outside of the above, it just didn't do much for me personally.

I still think the obstacle to be kind of dumb, but not beyond "Pinkie is desperate" levels of dumb.

Even Rarity Admitted how ridiculous that was, and it sort of came off as a last-minute-act-of-desperation-to-keep-people-happy sort of thing, which is definitely a pinkie trait.
