It's really weird, but I started Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and Twilight's ascension just reminds me of the "Contract ritual".

I would detail why Twi falling down a bottomless pit wouldn't hold a candle to what would happen to her if she followed the PMMM path like I hypothesized, but spoilers, and no one would expect spoilers to it here, so I have to be careful.

The magical girls make a wish, and with that wish, the energy of their hope is stored within the "Soul Gem". The Soul Gem is literally the soul, ripped from the body, and controls the once body of the girl.

 

When the amount of suffering the girl then experiences equals that of the hope generated by the wish, the Soul Gem becomes black and hatches into a "Witch", these witches are proportionately powerful to the magical girl they once were, and kill and curse humans around them in their insanity.

 

So, what I am getting at with this concept is that if Twilight followed this law to become an alicorn, she is a ticking time bomb of a villain, as is Cadance, and Celestia and Luna "contracted" Twi and Cad, in order to maintain the universe and stave off entropy.

Tartarus is a place mentioned in It's About Time. It's a place where evil creatures are held prisoner and guarded by the three-headed dog, Cerberus. Tartarus is from Greek mythology, being a deep dark pit below the underworld where many of the damned are imprisoned.

So it's pretty much exactly what you may remember from Disney's Hercules. But yeah, capturing an escapee who ran out of the worst place imaginable? I am okay with this.
