Pretty sure the creators of Bob's Burgers are bronies I kinda felt the same way, it's an exaggeration. Eh.

 

I kinda get the vibe they are too because it over reacts in a specific way that seems to criticize specific elements of our fanbase that folks just peering in through the window wouldn't outrightly know about with such detail. (Mainly that group of nutters that over reacts every time the show does something they don't like and feel that the show must conform to their desires instead of attempting to fit it's target demo. You know which groups i'm talking about i'm sure)

 

 

 

In other news, my dad is a complete madman, and beyond. Long story short, the MLP party got cancelled 2 weeks ago by my dad. Earlier today, I'd written sort of a Brony Origin piece on facebook. It was meant as a way to connect with any of my friends to see if there were potential bronies out there. Here's how my dad reacted:
 

 

That sucks, I'm not sure my dad realizes, i don't do much on facebook and I rarely talk to him as is, my ma knows as do my siblings Grandpa and i think my Grandma remembers but i'm not certain i've luckily never drawn fire for it. My Family has always been full of nerds though, we were nerds before it was cool, so i think that's why everyone here except maybe my dad who is strongly opposed to all things nerdish which is why i haven't really talked to him for a while, i get the feeling he would not approve of my Dual Degree in Linguistics and German nor of many of my hobbies. Though i did post some music to the facebook recently.

I've publicly bro-hoofed and high fived on multiple occasions with a variety of people in public. My City might be  a slowly shrinking cesspool at times but we're an open and accepting cesspool most of the time (Yay Detroit getting at least 1 thing right ) I've been getting increasing comments about my hat too which has excited me apparently everyone loves my new 4th gen Poke'badges and my new Cutie mark buttons  :3

Actually... at least here in michigan our little northeastern corner of the midwest and probably in Illinois and Chicago, Such folks are looked down upon socially as incredibly pathetic, typically seen through a stereotype lens of uneducated, rash, and for like of a better word as "Posers". And At least in my area we have special deragatory slang words that we use to describe them with. I'm not sure if it's elsewhere as i've not seen widespread use of the word outside of my little corner. Sorry to inform you :/ i'm not sure if this is most of the midwest though or localized to Detroit/Michigan and i would assume other major cities out this way. That is a thing we are very not accepting of here v.v

The best place to start is oftentimes the beginning. It was 20 years ago.

Like many children around my age, I’d grown up surrounded by televised cartoons and Disney movies, including films of similar style. It’d been nothing short of luck that I’d been raised during the “renaissance” of the animated world. Many films like Ferngully & Secret of NIMH in particular had shown that the style of cartoons weren’t restricted to being a form of entertainment meant to get a cheap laugh. A meaningful, emotional story could be told within that form; The well-known books of Dr. Seuss and it’s TV equivalent could be put in this category, too.

More satirical shows like Animaniacs were able to dance a strange line between “Kiddy” humor and Adult humor. It wasn’t the first time in cartoon history where this happened, but not to quite the same level. The fingerprints joke still haunts me to this day. Naturally Anime had an effect too, though not as great. Evangelion is one that many fans still regard as one of the best of Anime. For me, the characters were written like genuine human beings, not a cardboard personality like many of its competitors. Between all these influences, a heightened interest in Character, Humor, and a meaningful Storyline in animation had grown out of it.

Around the end of college, I’d gone on a hiatus from cartoons - or at least didn’t devote as much time to the hobby. It was the summer of 2011. As many others nerds do on the internet, I spent a healthy amount of time on message boards. Reading & Writing about the latest games or news, it was(and essentially still is) my primary social outlet. One day, I’d noticed a topic called “The Official My Little Pony Thread”.

I wasn’t taken aback by the prospect of the franchise itself, but by the bizarre popularity. The views had been in the hundreds of thousands, and it was stuck to the top of the board. For a long time, I’d tossed it off as a “It’s probably not for me” case and went on with my life as usual. During the beginning of 2012, I’d eventually dabbled my foot on the cold pond of water by posting a video of “Teens React to My Little Pony” to see what they thought. As it was free to watch them on YouTube, and I had the time, I took a leap of faith.

As the show’s visuals were all based around Flash, it wasn’t too big of a surprise that many savvy with the internet were lured in as well. However, that wasn’t quite what kept me interested. While I wasn’t as impressed with the very beginning, the show had altered itself into something wholly different as the episodes went on. Characters weren’t just overly happy talking horses, they were surprisingly relatable due to the narrative’s directions and the writing itself. Almost like Dr. Seuss’s work, they’d taken a cartoon setting as a way to tackle complex real-life issues and moral dilemmas. While Seuss focused on more global problems(no doubt caused by his time as a political cartoonist), MLP chose to get personal. Complex themes like physical disabilities for younger women(and the bullying that can come with it), having one’s generosity being taken advantage of to get ahead in the world, and a large handful of others were prevalent in the show. Many of Season 4’s episodes are almost notorious for this kind of emotionally resonant storytelling.

And yeah, they really know humor too. The referential humor varied anywhere from Early 20th Century films like Gone With The Wind, to modern culture like AMC’s Mad Men and BioShock Infinite. I’ve always been a sucker for Easter Eggs(mostly due to my gaming obsessions), so it was icing on the cake. Many have likened their humor to Animaniacs, and for good reason.

Hasbro’s team hasn’t been afraid to take peoples’ expectations and throw them out the window. They’d successfully undertaken a franchise known for being an overly-feminine marketing tool on little girls, and transformed it into the contemporary take of a setting most people wouldn’t expect to enjoy. The Seasons of MLP have changed as much as our own. Most of the episodes in the original were limited to a clever concept filled with appropriate humor, or a Muahaha villain with an uninteresting motive. Honestly, it was the “kiddy” Season. What came after that was the decidedly different. The Return of Harmony had managed to flip that trend(both literally, and otherwise), creating what’s generally considered the best 2-Parter Story they’ve done. The following one, Lesson Zero, had also taken much of what qualified as old hat for their series and tossed it away, never to be seen again. My Little Pony was growing up in a big way.

Believe it or not, the show turned out to be the tip of the Iceberg. The myriad of fan creations have varied anywhere from Fully-Playable Video Games, to Extraordinary Pieces of Art, 2500+ Page Fan Novels, and a volume of Internet Memes that would make futurama blush. Between that and the countless videos on YouTube or Newgrounds, it’d take hundreds of hours to see the best that MLP has to offer.

The path, however, has not come without its tribulations. Like many of my interests and lifestyles, it’s one that’s likely become considered as something better talked about in close circles and not in public discussion. To date, I’ve been mocked, accused of being a sexual deviant, told to grow up/act my age, and a plethora of others that I won’t be getting into in fine detail. The misconception of its fan base will likely never go away completely; I’m sure that Anime Fans, Trekkies, and other fandoms of yesteryear have fought similar battles.

It may partially be caused by the point of reference. If I’d mentioned the Dark Knight Trilogy to a friend, praising its new take on an old series, what if their only point of reference was the unanimously panned Batman & Robin? While it’s only a theoretical(and batman has a greater appeal than a brightly-colored talking horse), you’ll probably get the point. The association with its 1980s counterpart are inexorably tied together, and I can‘t honestly say that thought while viewing the topic long ago didn‘t occur to me.

The only good news on that respect is that the Community is changing the reputation for the better. The PBS YouTube Channel even hypothesizes that the MLP Community may be challenging what people qualify as masculinity. Many Celebrities, from Stephen Colbert to Lady Gaga and Seth Green are making themselves public on the subject. After 4 Years, the misconception of being only a kids show has at least improved over time.

I’d never fully understood that prospect. Adults have recently spent countless dollars on a “kids“ show, watching a high-budget film series based on a 1980s TV program aimed for children. They called it Transformers. While I do agree the demographic for both involves a younger age, I somehow don’t see making the lowest demographic the default one an appropriate answer. A lot of shows like Batman: The Animated Series were often noted for their adult themes and writing, even if their show was essentially a kids channel. Cases like Avatar: Legend of Korra follow a very similar trend of having an adult peripheral audience. Exclusive to neither Kids nor Adults, the formula is very similar to Disney. It hits both sides, while grabbing a bit of everywhere in between.

For me, it was never the setting that grew my attention. Its ability to take the elements of yesteryear, and harmoniously fuse them into one show was like a dream come true. Does it necessarily earn Legendary Status in the echelons of cartoons? Maybe not, but it’s still a trip I’ll be riding for quite some time.

I'm talking about the "white gangsta" stuff in that section not bronies as far as ponies go i think we're pretty accepting of it here in general at least in my little southearstern corner. Imma guess you live out westward or Northward but not in the UP. Also michiganian sounds so much better than michigander
