Do you feel like the "mane" show is on decline?

Nah. Season 4 was superior to 2 (and certainly had nothing as bad as Mysterious Mare Do Well). 3 was a step down from the latter, but I think that has more to do with length than anything. They had to cut down to 13 episodes in order to keep budget to do the Hasbro-mandated Equestria girls, and in general it suffered from occasional over-prominent toy advertising (which, let's be honest, the entire show is just a 22-minute toy advert, but the writers are usually good about not being overt about it), pandering to the older demographic, and rushed storylines.

As for Equestria Girls itself, I just so utterly do not care about it. It causes far more angst in the fandom than is deserved. Hasbro has identified a niche they need to fill in order to compete with Mattel (that's the Monster High demographic ... whatever the **** that is) and they're using a spin-off of a successful IP to fill it. It's good business sense, and it's no more intended for the older male fans than the original was.

I agree that a lot of flak comes down to length for Season 3. It didn't really carry the same momentum Season 2 left for it, but it was an above average season that came with some handy perks. They finally included characters/settings from 2-parters(Discord/Crystal Empire) into the Stand-Alones, Keep Calm and Flutter On 's episode has major >implications by itself as well.

which, let's be honest, the entire show is just a 22-minute toy advert, but the writers are usually good about not being overt about it

For most of it I would say they retain artistic integrity. And then Hasbro rears its ugly head and you get Rainbow Power adverts at the end of Season 4. Yeah THANKS HASBRO. According to Jim Miller from the producer panel, they get "requests" from them. Lovely.

Standin'

Anyway, here's a GIF:

I think IMDB agrees with Dominus's assessment that Season 4 is all over the place in quality.

Thing is though, this show only exists because Faust thought that being intended for younger female fans is not a valid excuse for things that suck. EQG could have been a lot worse, but that defense doesn't make sense to me.

I wish Eternal was still around.

I haven't seen him in the pony thread in a while, but 20 minutes ago he told me that I didn't treat Samus Aran fairly in a post I made on the Escapist forums.

Which makes the Mentally Advanced series better, according to bobo.

Damn Twilight gives the creepiest looks. Is everybody in agreement that she is terrible?

Perhaps in terms of personality. On one hand, she's been the crux of peacekeeping throughout 4 seasons. If it weren't for twilight, we wouldn't have gotten past the first 2 episodes.

...On the other hand, twilight is a dispositional mess. It'd be like making Hermoine the star of Harry Potter. A terrifying thought. One of MLP's more appreciated skills is taking a classical character archetype, and flipping it on its head. Probably why Tommy Oliver is obsessed with Rarity. One problem is that she's essentially the hand-holding tool for the audience, spelling out the entirety of an episode's scenario/theme instead of using more subtle techniques.

To their credit, they've tried to "nerf" twilight with decent results. The two that stand out would be Lesson Zero where they use the old insane stick on her by exploiting her protectionist nature. I'd argue the Princess Twi one also does that by throwing a ton of responsibility on top of all that power she's been granted.

I trust her with Intelligence & Business, but there's a lack of interest on a personal level.
Just give her a book, and everything will be fine.

In other news, PBS Idea Channel did a new video based on its brony bit. That plus non-pony stuff after the first 4 minutes.

Also, apparently Hasbro is relinquishing its controlling interest in the Hub, and the Hub will revert to Discovery branding (as Discovery Family Network - I forget what it was before but it wasn't much different, if at all). Apparently, however, they will still maintain some share of the channel, including controlling the 9am to 3pm block.

To me this actually makes sense. You don't need to own an entire damn channel in order to realize success with shows (and their attendant merch) - back in the brief period when anime ruled the US afternoon blocks, it was doing it with programming blocks on Fox and WB, broadcast networks. That's what the really need to do, if their shows are getting the audience numbers the suits want - at least try and get on basic cable, since the ongoing general demise of daytime network television probably isn't in their favor either.

So MLP couldn't be carryin the Hub all on its own? Arrrr! It be happening my mateys.

5 Days until Rainbow Rocks. There's a minute chance that the previews are misleading and it turns out to be great...but yeah, probably not going to happen.

So, the Earth Ponies Dilemma.

Also, Bonus Pony Question. Which is/was the most interesting or just your favorite friendship in the series?

CMC, Flutter/Discord, Sweetie/Rarity, that sort of thing.
Preferably not just saying "The Mane 6 cuz Power Rangers". :P

Eh, Earth Ponies. I always thought of them as being a bit like humans, they can't fly or use magic, but they can spend the time it would take to learn magic or work out in order to get good at flying to get good at other pursuits. They're at their best when they're inventing new technology to compensate for their lack of special powers.

As for the best/most interesting friendship, I'm going to have to go with Spike/Rarity. I know I should feel bad for Spike when witnessing the indignities he puts up with while being led along by Rarity, like the time she used him for a literal pin cushion, but as awkward as their relationship can be, it's still hilarious. Aside from Twilight, Rarity seems to be the only pony Spike has forged a meaningful connection to, and their friendship was the foundation of some of my favorite episodes, like "A Dog and a Pony Show" and "Inspiration Manifestation."

I like to think along the lines The Monster Below had early on, that they make up for it through higher endurance. Technological stuff would fit too. Agree about Spike/Rar, kudos to them for turning it into something more than just a tease for ship-fics.

That comic reminds me, I usually think of Spitfire as worst pony, but what if she's not? What if Red Delicious is even worse? I like to think that Red Delicious is the black sheep of the Apple Family, and he wasn't even invited to that party they were having in episode one. They were just too embarrassed to chastise him in front of Twilight. It might not be his fault, since he didn't choose the name, but his cutie mark still seems to imply that his special talent is related to the most hated apple in America.

Correct.

However, take what you know of the previous versions and wash them away. Cleanse yourself of... THE HORROR. Someone toss that to Rhl'lor.

If you have questions, it's a great place to ask. Fire away.
