Well, FiM's gone dark before. The Labyrinth in TRoH has dark stuff, For Whom The Yadda Yadda has it too. Inspiration Manifestation involved Rarity reading an unholy tome and becoming possessed by an evil spirit. So there's that.

I think the creators have done a good job at bending the show's formula to try concepts outside of some audience's comfort zone. Can't spend forever trying to avoid stepping on people's toes.
Yep, that. One of my favorite kids movies of all time is also the darkest - The Secret of NIMH.

tbth I think G1 Tirke has more to do with the fact that Gen 1 had a five dollar animation budget and four of it was spent on pizza. But there's no denying that some episodes of the original series look like deleted scenes from Heavy Metal. 

 

Anyways, the stuff we grew up with in the 90's (which in this case includes the 80's) could get really dark at times, sometimes too much so for little kids. I think the tone the show has struck during its more dramatic episodes (Return of Harmony, Canterlot Wedding, etc.) is a good medium. Hell even Equestria Girls suddenly got pretty dark there at the end for about fifteen minutes.
