Whoever wrote that is making a hell of a lot of assumptions. Why would the Elements of Harmony be linked to genes? Why should the a-gene even exist? Can't Rainbow Dash and Twilight just be especially talented?

Well, the a-gene explains whymost unicorns and a pegasi can't have an alicorn baby, but I always figured that having the Aa genotype would just make one a carrier for the trait, without increasing one's special talents.  Celestia has stated that she and Luna are not native to Equestria, so I would assume that only royalty would carry the recessive allele of this trait.

my guess is

No horns/no wings are dominant traits, and wings/horns are recessive.

which is why alicorns seem to be so rare.

u know if pegasi carry the dominant no-wings gene, that would mean some unlucky pegasi out there has an earth filly for an offspring. which means that the dominant no-wings gene has more or less been phased out of pegasi.

its true that a pegasi and a unicorn should by my knowledge have the highest chance of an alicorn offspring, but an earthpony with the recessive wings or recessive horns gene could potentially birth an alicorn, pegasi or unicorn.

in short, earthponies are everybody's momma.
