I saw a PMV of Stacie's Mom with Spike and Rarity (and Sweetie as the titular Stacie - obviously she's Rarity's sister but it doesn't really matter). It was actually kind of cute.

Love this one. Twilight's therapist glasses and grin and Rainbow's not amused face are win.

Don't forget he's always referred to as a BABY dragon.

So all the people wanting a grown ass pony to fall in love with a baby are friggen crazy.

Plus, he's going to live WAAAAY longer than she will, so it'll never work out.

I think Rarity is generally assumed to be the oldest of the group, along with Fluttershy. Correspondingly, Twilight is usually considered to be the youngest.

Dash and AJ and Pinkie seem to be a bit more amorphous in age, although I lean towards Pinkie being younger due to her living with the Cakes and AJ being older 'cause, you know, the whole "running a business" thing (although my personal headcanon is that Mac is ultimately in charge of Sweet Apple Acres, he just delegates the business side of things to AJ while he does the heavy labor). 

...The upshot of all this is that there's a fairly significant age difference between Spike and Rarity.

The Mane Six are all around the same age. And all of them are too old for him.

On top of that, she's a pony, and he's a dragon. That's an instant red flag.

Well, in D&D some dragons (brass or bronze, don't remember) sometimes mate with lions, producing hybrids. Why not with ponies?
