What is with all this Pony stuff?

I had a secret love affair with Pokemon at one time, but not to this extent. Actually I kept my Pokemon affair secret for many years so don't tell anyone. :D

It's not just the ponies, it's the show. It's a good show, with some elements clearly designed for people older than 18. Offhand I can think of two references: The Lone Ranger reference (no 8-year-old girl will have a clue who that is) and of course the "The New Hope" ending.

But the ponies too, they don't act like...I dunno, little bundles of estrogen. They act like normal people, you could say. So watching the show is like any other.

That's the trick, so to speak. Lauren Faust had already put herself on the map with Powerpuff girls and Foster's Home, with the former showing her writing can involve "girly" settings or themes while still keeping it relatable to a larger audience through the writing. It's respectable. It's why Equestria Daily sees countless hits. Visuals alone cannot sell Friendship is Magic. Fun facts from wikipedia:

Faust said she was "extremely skeptical" about taking the job at first because she had always found shows based on girls' toys to be boring and unrelatable.

But...!

My Little Pony was one of her favorite childhood toys,[10] but she was disappointed that her imagination at the time was nothing like the animated shows, in which the characters had "endless tea parties, giggled over nothing and defeated villains by either sharing with them or crying". With the chance to work on My Little Pony, she hoped to prove that "cartoons for girls don't have to be a puddle of smooshy, cutesy-wootsy, goody-two-shoeness". To do this, she incorporated into the design of the characters and the show many elements that contradicted idealized stereotypes of girls, such as diverse personalities, the message that friends can be different and can get into arguments but still be friends, and the idea that girls should not be limited by what others say they can or can not do.

And there is your answer.

I think I remember watching a Pony cartoon...and having Ponies in the 80's. They didn't suffer the same fate as my dolls at least; being dismembered, set ablaze, tortured in my little play dungeon. Just surprising to see the Ponies coming back.

Indeed. I liked the part in the last episode where the flutter ponies stop the smooze.

@Jestina: believe me, the current My Little Pony show is NOTHING like that sugary abomination from the '80s...

I'm genuinely surprised we still haven't seen the concept of a Pony Video Game. Make it happen, BioWare. You were able to pull off a sonic RPG(Sort of), you can do this too. Pause-and-Play Ponies?

On an amusing side note, the same voice actress who does twilight sparkle also did Toot braunsteen(Betty Boop Parody) from drawn together.

@EA in my head canon there are no Flutter Ponies because the Pegasi massacred them 800 years before the founding of Equestria over contested clouds. Never forget the Flutter Pony Genocide.

Hmm, when I look at the Fighting is Magic videos, I can't help but think that the Twilight-inspired character seems somehow overpowered in comparison to the other pony characters...

@Ivandra: Yeah, the last attack reminds me of a move back from chrono trigger, and looks pretty overpowering. Eh, I'm sure they'll balance it - that's pre-alpha, and they've got a lot to get to left.

@LP: I was probably meant to have yours, I think.

---

So...I'm up to episode 6 now. Leaving after the first 2 episodes was probably a bad idea, the show has dramatically improved since that point. I approve of this show.

I'm creating battle clones of soarin, for my airborne army of darkness. Cool stuff.

Yeah, as I said, the first two episodes aren't really that good to introduce new peoplez to the show...Btw, episode 10 is awesome. It was the episode that converted me into a brony/pegasister... ;_; (good times)
