what i got out of it wasn't too different, basically that both "rational thought" and "faith" can coexist and to keep an open mind about everything. Because not everything maybe explainable.

I've been thinkin'. Is it possible that the unicorn/pegasus distinction from earth ponies actually based on phenotype, not genotype?

For example, there is one gene, and its dominant allele leads to the formation of earth ponies. So AA or Aa is an earth pony. aa, however, allows the formation of wings or horns. It's possible that determining which one - or possibly both, if pegasus-unicorns as distinct from alicorns are possible - it develops is based upon the environment in which its carried. Thus unicorns, living lives saturated with magic, produce unicorns, while pegasi, living up in the sky and being subjected to their own brand of weather manipulation magic (which presumably weather features themselves - e.g. clouds - also exhibit), produce pegasi. It's possible for in odd cases for this to not quite work, resulting in Derpy having Dinky and so forth. Raised away from typical enviroments, such as in Earth pony-dominated Ponyville, and it's more or less a coinflip.

I don't think I've ever heard of phenotypes being determined while in the womb in real-world genetics, but hey, magic. *snort snort*
