You know, it's mentioned in Hearths' Warming Eve that the unicorns were always responsible for bringing forth day and night. But I have to wonder if that's not a element of a later period of Equestrian history that wound up getting retroactively placed into their foundation myth. Because it begs the question of how Celestia and Luna came to be solely responsible for it, and of how it got started in the first place - surely the unicorns didn't simply pop into existence and immediately figure out they had to manipulate the cosmos directly.
Thus, I wonder if the cessation of a natural revolution of the sun and moon was either a result of Discord's reign or of the use of the Elements of Harmony to defeat him, and thus Celestia and Luna had to do it themselves when they assumed leadership of Equestria. And that over 1000+ years the "true" story was corrupted into the version shown in the play.
