According to Fire Emblem lore (not sure if same rules apply, but indulge me) if you go too deep into the study of dark magic...you will one day lose your soul to it.

Of course Twilight has a soul, though.  Otherwise that whole incident in Lesson Zero with the "Want it, Need it" spell would've happened far more often and on clear purpose.
